In case you might have been living under a rock, Facebook is a social media and social networking service owned by American technology conglomerate Meta Platforms.

Facebook enables users to connect with friends, family, and acquaintances through the creation of personal profiles. Users can share text posts, photos, videos, and other content, engage with others’ posts through likes and comments, and join various interest groups and communities.

The platform serves as a virtual space for social interaction, allowing users to stay updated on the lives of their connections, share life events, and participate in discussions. Additionally, Facebook offers features like events, pages, and marketplace, enhancing its utility for both personal and business purposes.

There’s probably a lot that you don’t know about Facebook, but today my aim is to change that…

Here are 30 Interesting Facts You Might Not Know about Facebook

1. Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg, along with his college roommates Andrew McCollum, Eduardo Saverin, Chris Hughes, and Dustin Moskovitz. It was launched on February 4, 2004, initially as a social networking site for Harvard University students.

2. Since 2006, Facebook has permitted individuals to register at the age of 13 or older, with the exception of a few countries where the minimum age requirement is 14 years.

3. As of the third quarter of 2023, Facebook boasts 3.049 billion monthly active users, solidifying its position as the world’s largest app. This reflects growth from the same period 12 months earlier, when the user count stood at 2.91 billion.

4. India holds the title for the largest number of Facebook users globally, with an impressive statistic of 314.6 million users. This figure represents approximately 22% of India’s total population, which stands at 1.428 billion.

5. Approximately 51.48% of the entire U.S. population, which is currently at 339.9 million, are Facebook users. An estimated 175 million people in America have an active account, and the platform’s penetration in the US is increasing. This number is only 5.74% of the platform’s users though.

6. In 2022, about 71.43% of internet users in the United States were regular Facebook users. Projections indicate that by 2027, the percentage of the digital population engaging with this social network is anticipated to reach approximately 75%.

7. On average, 2.085 billion users visit the platform every day. This equates to just under a quarter of the global population, which currently exceeds 8 billion.

8. There are over 510,000 comments, 293,000 status updates, 136,000 uploaded photos, and a remarkable 4 million liked posts on Facebook per minute. With the platform continually growing and expanding, these figures are expected to only increase in the future.

9. Facebook remains a preferred choice among Millennials, with 69% using the platform compared to other social media platforms. In contrast, only 37% of Gen Z users are active on the platform. The usage of the platform among Millennials has experienced a slight decline, decreasing from 75% in late 2021 to 69% in November 2022.

10. 93% of social media marketers utilize the platform’s ads. Recognized as a fundamental component in marketing strategies on a global scale. The platform’s ads have the potential to reach the billions. It’s unsurprising that the majority of marketers consider this social network an indispensable platform for digital marketing.

11. In 2021, DataReportal revealed that 98.3 percent of users access the platform through their mobile devices. This leaves only 1.7 percent of users who exclusively log in using desktops or laptops.

12. The average watch time on the platform is 10 seconds. In terms of views, any video watched for more than 3 seconds is counted. A watch time exceeding 10 seconds indicates that viewers are actively engaging with and absorbing the content. Achieving an average watch time between 15 to 30 seconds is considered highly impressive and is a commendable goal.

13. A Pew Research Center survey found that 75% of women use Facebook, compared with only 63% of men.

14. Merely 50% of Facebook users communicate in English, with over half of the accounts configured in a language other than English. The platform offers convenience for non-English speakers by providing a selection of over 100 languages to choose from.

15. As of May 2023, South Africa has 30.7 million Facebook users. That’s more than half of the country’s population. The largest audience segment comprised individuals aged 25 to 34 years, constituting 29 percent of the overall user base.

16. In 2013, a whitehat hacker attempted to report a security bug to Facebook. After receiving no response, the hacker took matters into their own hands by hacking into Mark Zuckerberg’s account and posting details of the bug on his wall.

17. In 2014, the social media platform received criticism for conducting psychological tests on 70,000 participants without their consent in 2012. The company altered certain words in users’ newsfeeds to assess how it influenced their reactions to posts.

18. The Cambridge Analytica scandal involved a data firm, Cambridge Analytica, gaining unauthorized access to the personal information of millions of Facebook users. This data was then used for political profiling and targeting during the 2016 US presidential election.

The incident raised significant concerns about privacy, data protection, and the ethical use of personal information on social media platforms. Facebook faced criticism for its handling of user data and privacy issues in the aftermath of the scandal.

19. In 2019, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) imposed a $5 billion fine on Facebook for breaches of user privacy, marking a record-breaking penalty for a technology company.

20. In November 2019, a lawsuit filed by an app developer led to the release of more than 4,000 pages of internal company documents. These documents exposed details such as the company’s decisions to restrict developer access to data, contemplate tracking the locations of Android users, and explore the possibility of charging developers for access to user data, among other revelations.

21. Several nations have either prohibited or temporarily constrained access to Facebook, with other countries implementing various restrictions on the platform. As of July 2022, the only countries consistently maintaining a ban on access to the social networking site include China, Iran, North Korea, Myanmar, Russia, Turkmenistan and Uganda.

22. While serving as a readily accessible outlet for news and current affairs, the platform faces significant issues related to deceptive and harmful content. In the fourth quarter of 2022, the platform removed 1.3 billion fake Facebook accounts. Furthermore, during the same period, 6.4 million pieces of content were addressed due to their inclusion of bullying and harassment materials.

23. In 2022, Meta Platforms, the platform’s parent company, experienced a decline in annual revenue to over 116 billion U.S. dollars, marking its first decrease since 2009. Net income also dropped by over 40 percent year-over-year. The average revenue per user (ARPU) for Meta was 39.6 U.S. dollars, a three percent decrease from the previous year.

These financial setbacks were attributed to the normalization of business post-COVID-19 and increased competition from platforms like TikTok. Notably, the average revenue per Facebook user was significantly lower at 10.86 U.S. dollars.

24. The Facebook logo, created by Mike Buzzard of Cuban Council in 2005, features the name “facebook” in white Klavika typeface against a solid blue background. Facebook regards the simplicity of the design as a distinctive element of its brand, with the blue and white colors symbolizing purity and optimism.

25. The most prolonged downtime in the platform’s history had repercussions on affiliated apps as well. For more than 24 hours on July 3, 2019, Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram experienced an outage.

In an official statement, Facebook attributed the disruption to an unforeseen side effect of various system tests conducted by the technical team. The company also assured that they would take measures to prevent any future outages resulting from system tests.

26. Each day, Facebook produces an astounding 4 petabytes of data, equivalent to a million gigabytes. This massive volume of information is housed in a storage system referred to as the Hive, encompassing approximately 300 petabytes of data. The substantial amount of content creation is undoubtedly linked to the fact that Facebook users dedicate more time to the platform than users on any other social network, spending around an hour each day.

27. In 2007, Facebook boasted over 100,000 company pages, providing businesses a platform to showcase information and engage with potential customers. Over the subsequent decade, this figure skyrocketed, reaching more than 60 million Facebook business pages today.

These pages play a crucial role in the Facebook ecosystem, not only in terms of advertising revenue but also in user interactions. Nearly 40% of individuals follow Facebook pages for exclusive offers, and 32% regularly engage with them, contributing to over 5 billion monthly comments on Facebook pages.

28. According to Similarweb, Facebook holds the third position among the most visited websites globally, surpassed only by Google and YouTube. In comparison, rival social platform Twitter secures the fourth spot, and Instagram, another social app under Facebook’s ownership, occupies the fifth position on the list.

29. More than 1.8 billion individuals engage with Facebook Groups, where millions of groups on the platform facilitate connections among like-minded individuals, allowing them to share thoughts, information, and ideas. The platform is supported by 70 million dedicated group admins and moderators who work diligently to oversee these groups.

30. Users on mobile devices devote approximately 769 minutes per month to Facebook, making it the leading mobile social media app in terms of user engagement. TikTok trails as a distant second, with the average user spending about 498 minutes per month on the app. It’s important to acknowledge that this information is from 2019, and TikTok has experienced rapid growth since then. It’s conceivable that the gap has narrowed since then.
