Matchstick Men: 12 Interesting Facts You Might Not Know

Matchstick Men is one of my favourite films from the early 2000s. It’s a super cool movie that takes you into the world of con artists.

You’ve got Nicolas Cage playing Roy Waller, this total pro at tricking people out of their money. He’s got this crazy attention to detail ’cause of his OCD, which makes his cons even more interesting. Roy discovers he’s got a daughter, Angela, played by Alison Lohman. And guess what? She’s totally into the whole con artist thing too! So now they’re teaming up and pulling off all these elaborate scams.

Matchstick Men - 2003 film

The movie (which was released in 2003) is entertaining because it keeps you guessing with all these clever cons and surprises. There’s this awesome mix of drama, suspense, and dark humor. Nicolas Cage and Alison Lohman totally nail their performances, making the characters feel real and bringing depth to the story.

Ridley Scott directs the whole thing, and he does it brilliantly. He keeps you hooked from start to finish, wondering what’s gonna happen next. It’s one of those movies that keeps you on your toes and makes you question everything.

If you’re like me and into clever plots, complex characters, and a bit of psychological drama, Matchstick Men should be on your to-watch list (if you haven’t watched it already).

There’s probably a lot that you don’t know about this film, but today my aim is to change that.

Here are 12 Interesting Facts You Might Not Know about Matchstick Men

1. At her audition, Alison Lohman presented herself in a manner that portrayed her as a 14-year-old girl, both in her attire and her acting. It was only when she revealed her true age to Ridley Scott that he became aware that she was actually 23 years old at the time.

2. During the early stages of development, before Ridley Scott was brought on board, Steven Spielberg was approached to direct the film. However, he declined the offer in order to direct Catch Me If You Can (2002) instead.

3. The scenes in Matchstick Men that were set at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) were not actually filmed there. Instead, they were shot in the main entrance of the Anaheim Convention Center, which is located near Disneyland. This decision was influenced by the stricter security measures implemented at airports across the United States (after 9/11). The measures limited filming rights on airport properties.

4. This was the second Nicolas Cage movie to be composed by Hans Zimmer. The other 2 were The Rock (1996) The Weather Man (2005).

5. Matchstick Men experienced a rather underwhelming performance at the box office, with reported earnings of only $65 million, barely surpassing its budget of approximately $62 million. Consequently, the profit margin was quite narrow, suggesting that the audience’s motivation for watching it was likely driven more by curiosity than anything else.

6. Matchstick Men was Ridley Scott’s first film for Warner Bros. since Blade Runner (1982).

7. Many individuals with OCD do indeed identify with several of the symptoms depicted in the movie. The specific actions of opening and closing doors a particular number of times, the relentless desire to maintain cleanliness and neatness, as well as other tics demonstrated by Nicholas Cage’s character Roy, were regarded as highly accurate by a considerable number of people, although it is important to note that the portrayal may not encompass the entirety of the OCD experience for everyone.

8. The film is based on Eric Garcia’s 2002 novel of the same name. Garcia is also the creator and showrunner of the non-linear Netflix heist series Kaleidoscope.

9. Renowned film critic Roger Ebert awarded Matchstick Men a perfect four-star rating, praising it as “remarkably engrossing, with each shift in the narrative revealing an even more captivating storyline.” Ebert further recommended the film for several prestigious Oscar nominations, particularly highlighting Nicolas Cage’s exceptional performance and the outstanding screenplay.

10. Sam Rockwell plays the role of Frank Mercer. Frank Mercer was named for Frank Sinatra and Johnny Mercer. In the film, Roy Waller is seen playing records by both of them.

11. In the film Roy listens to the Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass song “The Lonely Bull” on vinyl record. The track selection is cut two – on this album “The Lonely Bull” is the first track.

12. In the closing credits, letters such as “M” and “W” are separated lines (presumably matchsticks), much like the type in the main title.

Well, there you have it, 12 Interesting Facts about the 2003 film Matchstick Men. If I’ve left out something important, feel free to comment below.
