New York City is a place like no other—a global icon known for its towering skyline, bustling streets, and vibrant culture. Whether you’re strolling through Central Park, riding the subway, or gazing up at the Empire State Building, every corner of the city tells a story.

But beyond the famous landmarks and fast-paced lifestyle, the Big Apple is packed with surprising and little-known facts that reveal just how unique it truly is.

1. New York City began as a Dutch settlement called New Amsterdam in 1624 and was renamed New York in 1664 after the Duke of York.

2. Before Washington, D.C., New York served as the United States’ first capital from 1785 to 1790 and George Washington was inaugurated there in 1789.

3. With around 8.8 million residents, New York City has more people than 39 U.S. states and represents about 3% of the United States’ population.

4. Over 800 languages are spoken across the city, making it the most linguistically diverse place on Earth.

5. The New York City metro area hosts the highest concentration of billionaires globally, yet it also includes significant populations of students with minimal wage income and deep poverty.

6. The iconic Statue of Liberty arrived from France in 350 pieces (in 200 crates) and took about four months to assemble on Liberty Island. It was officially dedicated on October 28, 1886.

7. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York holds one of the biggest gold reserves on earth, situated 24 metres (80 feet) below ground.

8. The New York Public Library system holds over 50 million items, ranking second only to the Library of Congress in the USA and third globally.

9. Since the 1960s, the cost of a slice of pizza in New York City has closely tracked the price of a subway ride.

10. Lombardi’s opened in New York City’s Little Italy in 1905 as America’s very first pizzeria and still operates today.

11. 75½ Bedford Street in Greenwich Village measures just 2.7 metres (9 feet) wide – the city’s narrowest house.

12. Despite the constant car horns that define the city’s soundscape, honking is actually illegal in New York City.

13. With roughly 842 acres and 42 million annual visitors, New York’s Central Park is also the most filmed location in the world—featured in over 530 films.

14. If independent, the borroughs of Brooklyn (and Queens) would each rank as the 4th-largest city in the USA.

15. Engineers once marched elephants across the Brooklyn Bridge to prove its structural integrity in 1884 .

23. New York City has about 836 kilometres (520 miles) of coastline, exceeding the combined coastlines of Boston, Los Angeles, Miami, and San Francisco

24. During the famously cold winter of 1780, New York Harbor froze completely—reportedly allowing people to walk or even skate across to Staten Island.
