Oppenheimer, a 2023 epic biographical thriller film directed by Christopher Nolan, chronicles the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist instrumental in the creation of the atomic bomb during World War II.

The film is adapted from the Pulitzer Prize-winning biography American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin.

The film’s narrative is presented in a nonlinear fashion, starting with a 1954 security hearing where Oppenheimer defends himself against allegations of communist ties.

It then shifts to his early years, delving into his education in quantum physics and his role as the leader of the Manhattan Project in Los Alamos, New Mexico, where he gathered a team of scientists to build the atomic bomb.

The film emphasizes Oppenheimer’s internal struggle with the ethical consequences of his work, particularly after the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The film features Cillian Murphy in the role of J. Robert Oppenheimer, with Emily Blunt portraying his wife, Katherine “Kitty” Oppenheimer. Robert Downey Jr. takes on the character of Lewis Strauss, while Matt Damon plays General Leslie Groves, and Florence Pugh appears as Jean Tatlock.

There’s probably a lot that you don’t know about this film, but today my aim is to change that…

Here are 15 Interesting Facts You Might Not Know About Oppenheimer

1. The film grossed over $900 million worldwide within four months of its release, making it one of the highest-grossing R-rated films of all time.

2. Oppenheimer received widespread praise for its direction, performances (especially Murphy’s), and technical achievements. Critics highlighted its complex storytelling and ethical explorations surrounding scientific advancements.

3. The film won seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director for Nolan, and Best Actor for Murphy. It also swept the Golden Globe Awards with five wins out of eight nominations.

4. To ensure the black-and-white sections of the movie matched the quality of the rest of the film, Kodak produced a limited supply of its 70mm Double-X black-and-white film stock. This particular stock was selected for its historical significance, as it was originally sold as Super-XX during World War II and became a favorite among photojournalists of that time.

5. Matt Damon had taken a break from acting as a promise to his wife, with the caveat that he would pause it if Christopher Nolan called. As fate would have it, Nolan approached Damon with the role of Leslie Groves, prompting him to put the break on hold.

6. The Trinity detonation scene in Oppenheimer was created using a blend of practical effects and digital compositing.

Several explosions were conducted using a mix of gasoline, propane, aluminum, and magnesium with large-scale miniatures. These explosions were filmed at high speeds from various angles, and then digitally layered to form the iconic mushroom cloud.

7. Christopher Nolan noted that a key benefit of working with an ensemble cast was the extensive documentation on the lives and personalities of the Manhattan Project scientists. This allowed each actor to come prepared with an in-depth understanding of their character and their interactions with the rest of the team.

8. The 2022 AEC hearing room scenes in Oppenheimer were shot in an actual office space with four walls and no air conditioning. Christopher Nolan wanted the actors to experience authentic claustrophobia, creating a challenge for filming within the confined space.

Unlike a studio set where walls or ceilings could be adjusted, the team had to work within these limitations, with Nolan and the crew often crouching or sitting on the floor to stay out of the camera’s view during filming.

9. In an early scene, when Oppenheimer is asked what the “J” in his name stands for, Patrick Blackett’s character interrupts with “Nothing,” leaving the question unanswered in the film. In reality, the “J” stands for “Julius,” after Oppenheimer’s father, but Oppenheimer often claimed it stood for nothing. Similarly, President Harry S. Truman’s middle initial “S” also stands for nothing.

10. Christopher Nolan emphasized immersion during filming, requiring the cast to rehearse and arrive on set in full costume. Actors seen in modern clothing were given a disapproving look until they changed. This approach aimed to keep the cast ready for shooting at any moment, minimizing delays.

11. In an interview with reporter David Martin on CBS Sunday Morning (July 16, 2023), director Christopher Nolan revealed that the entire reel of IMAX film stock used for the production measures 17.7 km (11 miles) in length and weighs 272 kg (600 lbs).

12. Oppenheimer marks the sixth collaboration between Cillian Murphy and Christopher Nolan, following their work in Batman Begins (2005), The Dark Knight (2008), Inception (2010), The Dark Knight Rises (2012), and Dunkirk (2017). Murphy has appeared in more Nolan films than any other actor, except for Michael Caine, who has featured in eight, including an uncredited vocal cameo in Dunkirk.

13. This was Nolan’s first biopic, although he had previously considered making one. He wrote a script about Howard Hughes, but when The Aviator, directed by Martin Scorsese, began development, he set it aside. Nolan stated that this experience ultimately helped him shape the script for Oppenheimer.

14. Time moves forward, even in places like Los Alamos, New Mexico. Christopher Nolan initially aimed to shoot the exteriors in the actual town, but today it features a Starbucks on the main street, which doesn’t quite reflect a 1940s aesthetic. As a result, he opted to construct the exteriors at Ghost Ranch, New Mexico. The set took three months to build and was used for six days of filming.

15. While Christopher Nolan incorporated a wealth of accurate detail from American Prometheus into Oppenheimer, he permitted some deviations from the historical record. Notably, although Albert Einstein and Oppenheimer were acquaintances, some of their conversations in the film are fictional.

Additionally, Oppenheimer did not consult Einstein about his concerns regarding an unstoppable chain reaction; instead, he turned to Arthur Compton, who doesn’t carry the same level of renown as Einstein.
