Inception is a 2010 science fiction action film which was written and directed by Christopher Nolan and co-produced by Emma Thomas (his spouse).

Inception features Leonardo DiCaprio portraying a skilled thief specialized in extracting information by delving into the subconscious minds of his targets. He is presented with an opportunity to clear his criminal record in exchange for planting someone else’s idea into the subconscious of a designated individual.

The ensemble cast includes Ken Watanabe, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard, Elliot Page, Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Tom Berenger, Dileep Rao, and Michael Caine.

There’s probably a lot that you don’t know about this film (which happens to be one of my favourite science fiction films of all time), but today my aim is to change that.

Here are 17 Interesting Facts you might not know about Inception

1. Despite featuring extensive surreal effects sequences, the bulk of visual effects in Inception, including the Penrose stairs, rotating hallway, mountain avalanche, and zero-gravity scenes, were achieved through practical means rather than computer-generated imagery.

With only approximately five hundred visual effects shots, this movie stands in contrast to many other visual effects-heavy productions, which often surpass two thousand visual effects shots.

2. Christopher Nolan has cited his favorite James Bond film, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969), as the inspiration behind the snow-based third-level dream sequence in the movie

3. During the fight scene in the spinning hallway, Joseph Gordon-Levitt executed all of his own stunts except for one.

4. Joseph Gordon-Levitt attended his audition following a brief character description, opting to wear a full suit “just in case,” coincidentally aligning with his character’s attire without prior knowledge.

5. After finishing his third film, Insomnia (2002), Christopher Nolan proposed the idea for this movie to Warner Bros., which they approved.

However, the script had not been written yet. Nolan decided to write it on speculation rather than as an assignment, intending to present it to the studio upon completion. Initially estimating a couple of months for the task, it ultimately took him nearly eight years to complete.

6. By taking the initial letters of the main characters’ names in Inception: Dom, Robert, Eames, Arthur, Mal, and Saito—they form the word “Dreams.” Adding Peter, Ariadne, and Yusuf, the entirety spells out “Dreams Pay,” reflective of their role as facilitators for a mind thief.

7. Despite prominent billing, Michael Caine has only three minutes of screentime in Inception.

8. Inception‘s duration, spanning two hours and twenty-eight minutes, serves as a nod to the original length of Édith Piaf’s song “Non, je ne regrette rien,” which clocks in at two minutes and twenty-eight seconds on its initial recorded edition. The running time of the movie on DVD is exactly 8888 seconds.

9. Throughout the movie, the recurring appearance of the number 528491 underscores its significance. This number is given by Fischer to Cobb/Arthur, corresponds to the hotel room numbers (528 and 491), is provided by Eames (disguised as a woman) to Fischer as a phone number (528-491), starts the combination to the strongroom, and is the combination to the safe. Mathematically, 528491 is a prime number.

10. Until 2016, when La La Land won, Inception was the final film shot on film to receive an Academy Award for Best Cinematography. All winners in the years between were shot digitally.

11. The scenes that supposedly take place in Mombasa, Kenya are actually filmed in Tangiers, Morocco.

12. Christopher Nolan revealed that one of the inspirations behind Inception stemmed from his sleep habits during his college years. He recounted a routine where his school provided free breakfast until 9 AM, prompting him to stay up late, wake up for the complimentary meal, and then return to sleep.

This cycle led him into a state of lucid dreaming, where he became aware of his dreaming state. Describing it as akin to a “super power,” Nolan experimented with controlling his dreams during these episodes.

13. In 2010, this movie ranked as the third most pirated film with 9.72 million downloads on BitTorrent, following behind Avatar (2009) with 16.58 million downloads and Kick-Ass (2010) with 11.4 million downloads.

14. In Inception, characters hailing from five continents unite for a significant heist. Cobb, Arthur, and Mal originate from the U.S. (North America). Cobb recruits Ariadne from Paris, France (Europe), while Eames and Yusuf come from Mombasa (Africa). Saito represents Japan (Asia), and Fischer is from Australia.

15. In this film, several actors from The Dark Knight trilogy, also helmed by Christopher Nolan, make appearances. Michael Caine and Cillian Murphy reprise their roles as Alfred Pennyworth and The Scarecrow across all three movies.

Additionally, Ken Watanabe portrays Ra’s al Ghul in Batman Begins (2005), while Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tom Hardy, and Marion Cotillard star in The Dark Knight Rises (2012) as John Blake, Bane, and Miranda Tate, respectively.

16. The film had a budget of $160 million and made $839 million at the box office.

17 Inception was filmed in 6 countries: The UK, France, Japan, Canada, the USA and Morocco.
