Chevelle finished their 2 show tour of South Africa last night at Carnival City (on Johannesburg’s East Rand). I was one of the privileged band photographers to take photos of them. It was one of the musical highlights of the year for me, so far.
Unlike the Cape Town show, the Johannesburg show was sold out a few weeks after the tour was announced by Hilltop Live. It was interesting experiencing an arena rock scenario at Carnival City, because I’m not really used to it. The Big Top Arena is a pretty awesome venue though.
The opening act Shadowclub rocked the Joburg crowd to the max and got them in the mood for a rocking evening. These Joburg boys truly know how to get the party started. Chevelle stepped onto the stage at 8 PM and completely blew the crowd away with songs like “Jars”, “The Meddler”, “Letter from the Thief”, “Vitamin R” and others. They ended off the show with awesome performances of their hit songs “Send the Pain Below”, “The Red” and “Face to the floor”.
The crowd sang along quite loudly to the last three songs. The vibe during the show was pretty electric and it was awesome to bump into some familiar faces. Some of the queues were a bit long, but it was the only tiny issue that I had, the sound was brilliant and the lighting was awesome.
Here are some photos that I took during at Chevelle’s set last night:
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Hilltop Live for the opportunity to photograph this awesome live act from the USA. Let’s hope that they bring us more awesome acts in the future.
