Queen Sono, Netflix’s first original South African and African series was unveiled earlier today.

Pearl Thusi (a veteran South African actress who has appeared on TV’s Quantico) will star as the title character. The title character is said to be a top spy in a South African agency.

Queen Sono will track her on her most dangerous mission, while simultaneously following her changing relationships in her personal life. South African comedian Kagiso Lediga will be directing the series and Tamsin Andersson is the executive producer.

Netflix released this statement about Queen Sono:

“We are excited to be working with Kagiso and Pearl, to bring the story of Queen Sono to life, and we expect it to be embraced by our South African users.”

Kagiso Lediga had the following to say:

“We are delighted to create this original series with Netflix, and are super excited by their undeniable ability to take this homegrown South African story to a global audience. We believe Queen Sono will kick the door open for more awesome stories from this part of the world.”

Queen Sono will begin production next year. This announcement comes after Netflix said that they were looking for opportunities in Africa.

Netflix retweeted Pearl Thusi’s video earlier today:

That’s right! A Netflix first for Africa. Pearl Thusi as #QueenSono coming to your screens in 2019 https://t.co/pojP7Y0cLX

Netflix’s director of international original films, Funa Maduka, told Variety in Marrakesh earlier this month that such moves are “just the beginning” for Netflix’s plans for African the continent.

This is great news for South African and Africans! Queen Sono will open up doors for content creators who have been looking for a platform to tell their stories. The series will launch globally in  2019.

I don’t know about you guys, but I’m pretty excited about this. It’s only a matter of time before we’ll be seeing some great South African and African stories on Netflix. Do you agree? Leave a comment below and let me know what you think.
