A rich musical legacy comes to life as the Diamond City Jazz Festival presents a dynamic fusion of generations, uniting jazz icons and rising stars for an evening of extraordinary artistry.

Set against the picturesque Bojanala Waterfront in Botswana, this year’s festival (which is happening on the 29th of March 2025) will feature legendary musicians Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse, McCoy Mrubata, Steve Dyer, and Bhudaza Mapefane, sharing the stage with a new wave of talent—ensuring jazz continues to evolve while honouring its roots.

For decades, these esteemed artists have shaped African jazz, blending indigenous rhythms with global influences to craft a sound that transcends borders.

Diamond City Jazz Festival Director Hotstix Mabuse, a trailblazer in South African jazz and popular music, has inspired generations with classics like “Burn Out”.  McCoy Mrubata, a master saxophonist, has carried the torch of Cape jazz, fusing tradition with modern elements.

From Lesotho, Bhudaza Mapefane has captivated audiences with his soulful saxophone and deep Sesotho jazz, while Steve Dyer, a revered musician and composer, has earned recognition for his fusion of traditional African sounds with contemporary jazz.

More than just a concert, this festival is a cultural exchange where wisdom meets innovation. A new generation of artists—including Mpumi Dhlamini, Nono Siile, Azana, Jordan Moozy, and Mpho Sebina—will take the stage alongside these jazz veterans, infusing the genre with fresh perspectives and energy. This event is a testament to jazz as a living, breathing art form—one that respects its heritage while embracing the future.

“Jazz is storytelling, and every generation adds its own voice to the narrative,” says festival curator Rapula Kegopilwe. “This festival ensures that the knowledge, technique, and passion of icons like Hotstix, McCoy, and Bhudaza continue to inspire and shape the musicians of tomorrow.”

Kegopilwe adds, “This platform is a reflection of our shared cultural heritage and the thriving music scene that connects us all. Through a strong commitment to unity in the arts, this festival brings together artists and audiences from across the region, bound by a collective love for jazz.”

Beyond the performances, the Diamond City Jazz Festival will include mentorship sessions, allowing emerging artists to gain valuable insights into the industry, refine their craft, and deepen their understanding of jazz’s cultural significance. This initiative aligns with the festival’s mission—to nurture talent, preserve heritage, and bridge generations.

Adding to the festival’s networking and engagement activities, a golf day at the Stanbic Golf Course will provide a relaxed setting where musicians, industry leaders, and business professionals can connect before the main event.

The Diamond City Jazz Festival is more than just a celebration of music—it’s a hub for cultural exchange, community engagement, and creative expression. Beyond the star-studded lineup, attendees can explore local crafts, indulge in culinary delights, and interact with artists in an immersive experience.

As the festival unfolds, audiences will witness a powerful musical dialogue across generations, proving that while melodies may evolve, the soul of African jazz remains steadfast.

Tickets are available now from P300 (R400) —secure yours today and experience the finest in African jazz in the heart of Botswana.
