Tom Cruise is one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, known for his action-packed roles and charismatic presence. His breakthrough came in Risky Business (1983) and Top Gun (1986), and he has since starred in countless hits like Born on the Fourth of July (Oscar-nominated, 1989), Jerry Maguire (1996), and the Mission: Impossible films.

There’s probably a lot that you don’t know about him, but today my aim is to change that…

Tom Cruise

Here are 24 Interesting Facts you might not know about Tom Cruise

1. Tom Cruise (full name Thomas Cruise Mapother IV) was born on the 3rd of July 1962 in Syracuse, New York in the USA.

2.  He has won three Golden Globe Awards – for Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire and Magnolia. He has never won an Academy Award, but he has been nominated a few times.

3. He’s long wanted to film a movie in space—and in fact, a real project with NASA and SpaceX is in development to send Cruise to the International Space Station.

4. He has been married three times. He wed actress Mimi Rogers in 1987 (they divorced in 1990), then Nicole Kidman in 1990 (divorced 2001), and Katie Holmes in 2006 (divorced 2012). Cruise and Kidman adopted two children (daughter Isabella and son Connor), and he has a daughter, Suri, with Katie Holmes.

5. Tom Cruise grew up moving frequently – born in Syracuse, NY, he lived in Canada and then in Kentucky/New Jersey after his parents divorced when he was 11.

6. Like his three sisters, he struggled with severe dyslexia, which he later overcame with special tutoring. As a teenager he even trained briefly for the priesthood, enrolling in a seminary at 14, but left after a year and discovered a passion for acting when he starred in a school musical (Guys and Dolls) at 16.

7. Tom Cruise’s commitment to learning is another fun angle: he treats every film role as an excuse to pick up new skills. In interviews he’s noted that he takes dance and piano lessons between movies so he can use those talents on screen. He even claims he learns weapons and flying skills, knowing they’ll “eventually…be used in a movie.”

8. Tom Cruise has told People that he finds playing the piano “relaxing” (though he admits he only “enjoys hitting the keys” rather than actually playing).

9. In preparation for extreme stunts, rumour has it that he follows a famously hearty diet. Cruise has jokingly said that he’ll eat “a massive breakfast” of nearly a dozen eggs, bacon, toast and coffee to fuel up for a big stunt.

10. Tom Cruise is also an aviation buff: he earned his pilot’s license in 1994 and has flown some of the planes in his films.

11. Cruise is known for chest-thumping action roles, but he’s also quietly won sports fans’ respect too – he served as a flag-bearer for Team USA at the 2024 Paris Olympics and literally swung in during the closing ceremony’s opening act!

Cruise (who was 62 years old at the time) jumped from the stadium roof, waved to gymnast Simone Biles, then strapped the Olympic flag to his motorcycle and drove off, handing off to Los Angeles for 2028.

12. Tom Cruise became involved with the Church of Scientology in the late 1980s. His first wife, Mimi Rogers (married 1987–1990), was a Scientologist and is credited with introducing him to the faith.

He quickly embraced Scientology, and credits Hubbard’s “Study Technology” with helping him conquer his dyslexia. As Cruise once said, after learning Study Tech he “realized [he] could absolutely learn anything [he] wanted to learn.”

The church remains a central part of his life: Cruise is often described as one of its highest-profile members.

13. Cruise’s bank account is as impressive as his action scenes. Celebrity Net Worth estimates his fortune around $600 million. He’s earned enormous salaries and profit shares: for Top Gun: Maverick he reportedly took home about $100 million (including a $12.5M salary plus a 10% cut of box-office revenue).

14. Forbes has noted that over his career Cruise has amassed over $1 billion in earnings. His films’ global box office is equally staggering (over $12 billion total, reflecting his star power.

15. Tom Cruise stands at around 5’7″ (1.70m), and his height has often been a topic in Hollywood due to him starring opposite taller actresses.

16. He co-founded the production company Cruise/Wagner Productions in 1992, which produced many of his films, including Mission: Impossible titles.

17. Tom Cruise is fluent in English, but he has learned basic Japanese and German phrases for press tours and fans.

18. His first film role was a small part in the Endless Love (1981), but he caught attention shortly after in the 1981 film Taps (1981). His big break came two years after that when he appeared in Risky Business (1983).

Check out the dance scene from Risky Business below:

19. During a scene with a mechanical horse in The Last Samurai, Cruise was almost decapitated by a co-star’s sword when the robot malfunctioned—but he narrowly escaped.

20. To prepare for Mission: Impossible – Fallout, Cruise trained extensively and did over 500 skydives and 13,000 motorcycle jumps to perfect his stunts.

21. Tom Cruise has admitted he’s not a fan of watching himself on screen, even though he’s incredibly involved in all aspects of production. He rarely watches the films he’s starred in.

22. Cruise is known for spending hours signing autographs and taking photos with fans at premieres—sometimes staying long after the event ends.

23. He has quite a diverse resume. Cruise has played a cocky fighter pilot, vampire, sports agent, samurai warrior, spy, rock star, and even a foul-mouthed movie executive (Les Grossman in Tropic Thunder).

24. His influence has helped boost the careers of Renée Zellweger (Jerry Maguire) and Emily Blunt (Edge of Tomorrow).
