Today we’re tackling the year that was 1980. I was only 3 years old back then, so I have a very vague recollection of events that occurred in this year.

History has always fascinated me, and I’m sure that it has the same effect on many of you reading this post. I’m done beating around the bush, so let’s get into it…

Here are 20 Notable Events in 1980:

    1. The USA led a boycott of the Moscow olympics

The reason for this was because the Soviet Union had invaded Afghanistan. Apparently the US didn’t like that.

    2. John Lennon was shot and killed

The shooting happened outside his apartment building in New York City on the 8th of December 1980. He was shot by Mark David Chapman (who was obsessed with the novel The Catcher & The Rhye).

    3. John Bonham died in 1980

The Led Zeppelin drummer died in Clewer, Berkshire, England. The cause was labeled as accidental death. He had the equivalent of 40 vodka shots in his system (thanks to a day of heavy drinking and rehearsing).

The planet’s population grew with 700 million in the 10 years between 1970 and 1980. Earth’s current population is estimated at 7.5 billion.

    7. Pink Floyd’s Another Brick In The Wall was banned in South Africa

The Apartheid government featured that it might be used as a song of liberty by black school children.

    8. Zimbabwe gained independence from the UK

57 people were killed, 250 homes, 47 bridges, 15 miles (24 km) of railways and 185 miles (298 km) of highway were destroyed. A massive debris avalanche triggered by an earthquake caused a lateral eruption. This reduced the elevation of the mountain’s summit from 9,677 ft (2,950m) to 8,363 ft (2,549m) and left a 1 mile (1.6 km) wide horseshoe-shaped crater.

The famous actor / comedian did this when he was freebasing cocaine and drinking 151-proof rum. He ran down his street in Northridge, California until he was subdued by police. According to his daughter he was in a drug-induced psychosis. He had poured rum over his body and set himself on fire. Prior was given a 1-in-3 chance to live, but he survived and continued to do stand-up.

During his 1982 comedy show, the street-wise comedian joked that the fire was caused by dunking a cookie into a glass of low-fat and pasteurized milk.
