Retro Dizzy are one of the acts who will be performing at the Good Luck Bar’s 2nd Birthday party on the 9th of September in Johannesburg.
In case you did not know, Retro Dizzy is a surf rock band from Cape Town. The band consists of Nicolaas Rossouw (on drums), Andre Vlok (on guitar, backing vocals), Stuart Dods (on bass, backing vocals) and Richard Liefeldt (on vocals, guitar).
The band was formed in 2014 in the small town of Hermanus, but they moved to Cape Town to become part of a growing psych / garage / surf scene. Retro Dizzy have consistently toured South Africa for the past 3 years growing their fan base and honing their craft and preforming at festivals such as Rocking the Daisies, Mieliepop, Lush, Smoking Dragon, Endless Daze and Malkop.
They reached number one on Tuks FM’s local chart with their single, ‘My Baby Got Electrocuted’. This song and their songs ‘Honey’ and ‘Lick Your Tongue’ have been play listed on all student radio stations in South Africa as well as some of the underground stations such as Zone Radio and Grind Radio.
I recently had a quick chat to the band about their upcoming show at the Good Luck Bar and a few other things, this is what they had to say:
Where does the name Retro Dizzy come from?
It’s an Anglo-Saxon word for being at peace with one’s body and we found it on a box outside Tops…
If someone asks you to describe your style of rock ‘n roll, what do you tell them?
We tell them to firstly calm down and once they are sitting down with a coffee we explain to them that our music cannot be put into a cage. This is not a communist state.
What is your favorite city to play in, in South Africa and why? And favourite band to share the stage with?
Stellenbosch isn’t a city but it’s our favourite. Especially Bohemia, the kids go crazy and the bartenders look after us. That’s all we need. Favourite band has to be Elastic.
How do you think the scene has evolved and do you think that it’s a good or a bad thing?
The scene is currently very healthy and creative which is 100% a good thing, however certain festivals haven’t figured out what the kids are listening to and rather book tried and tested light entertainment bands.
What can audiences expect from your set at Good Luck Bar on the 9th of September?
Nudity.
