South African pop artist Ben Rodrigues is turning one of the most memorable moments of his love story into a feel-good pop anthem. Out now, “A Girl Like You” is a playful and nostalgic new single inspired by the first time Ben laid eyes on his now-fiancée, Talisha.
The story behind “A Girl Like You” begins on the night of Ben Rodrigues’ first-ever live show. He had invited Talisha to attend, and moments before stepping onto the stage, Ben peeked out from behind the curtain.
She was the first face he saw. That real-life moment became the inspiration for the opening verse of “A Girl Like You”, with Ben recalling the instant he first saw Talisha and was immediately struck by her.
“How Did a Guy Like That Get a Girl Like You?”
From there, “A Girl Like You” takes a playful approach to an unlikely love story, built around a question Ben has heard countless times in one form or another: “How did a guy like that get a girl like you?”
Instead of taking the question personally, Ben decided to turn it into the central hook of the song.
Ben explains that he has been asked some version of the question many times, so he decided to have some fun with it. The song essentially sees him admitting that he’s just as surprised as everyone else that he managed to win over someone like Talisha.
Lyrically, Ben pokes fun at himself throughout the track, wondering how someone who seems “way too good” for him ended up becoming his girlfriend and, ultimately, his fiancée.
The joke eventually expands beyond Ben’s own relationship, speaking to anyone who has ever looked at their partner and wondered how they managed to pull it off.
It’s this playful self-awareness that gives “A Girl Like You” its feel-good charm, turning a personal love story into something listeners can easily relate to.
Sonically, “A Girl Like You” draws on the fun and melodic pop sound of the early 2000s, complete with the kind of big, instantly memorable chorus that defined an era of feel-good pop.
