South African singer-songwriter Ben Rodrigues steps into deeply personal territory with his latest single, “Hazel Eyes” – an emotionally charged ballad that signals a shift in both sound and storytelling.

Known for viral pop hits like “Was It Real”, “Tell Me How”, and “Homesick”, Ben now explores a more intimate and reflective space with this release.

Written on Tour in the UK

“Hazel Eyes” was penned during Ben’s first UK tour in April last year. While performing internationally marked a major milestone in his career, the experience also came with emotional challenges.

“It was my first time leaving South Africa to perform internationally, and while it was incredibly exciting, it was also terrifying,” Ben shares. “For the first time, the music felt real in a way it never had before.”

Being away from home – and from his girlfriend, who couldn’t join him on that tour – tested both his relationship and his resolve.

A 3am Hotel Room Confession

The song came together in the early hours of the morning in a London hotel room. “I was sitting on the floor at 3am, eating cereal straight out of the box after a phone call home,” he recalls.

“I remember praying, ‘I hope this life doesn’t take her away from me. I hope I don’t lose my hazel eyes.’” In the track, “hazel eyes” becomes a metaphor for the loved ones we risk sacrificing while chasing our dreams – a theme that resonates far beyond the music world.

Ben Rodrigues is taking a New Emotional Direction

“This is the most emotionally driven song I’ve ever written,” Ben Rodrigues explains. “Up until now, my music has been upbeat pop, so releasing an emotional ballad like this feels new – and honestly a bit scary. This song carries a lot of weight for me.”

“Hazel Eyes” offers the first glimpse into his forthcoming album, set for release in June. Ben describes the project as entirely new territory, both lyrically and sonically, with this single serving as the emotional gateway into that chapter.

2026 is shaping up to be a defining year for the rising artist. In addition to the album release, Ben is preparing for his biggest nationwide tour yet. He will also travel to the United States in April to collaborate with internationally respected songwriters and producers, including ZVC – the brother and producer of JVKE, known for the global hit “Golden Hour.”

South African fans can catch him live at Kirstenbosch on 22 March, where he’ll share the stage with Will Linley in what promises to be a memorable performance.

An Honest Reflection on Dreams and Love

With “Hazel Eyes”, Ben Rodrigues strips everything back, offering listeners a raw and intimate moment. The single captures the beauty, vulnerability and emotional cost that often accompany the pursuit of one’s calling – reminding us that ambition and love don’t always move at the same pace.
