Botswana-born singer-songwriter Deena G has joined forces with acclaimed South African producer and DJ Sun-El Musician for her brand-new single, “Stay”. The track serves as the highly anticipated lead single from her debut EP, Transcend.
Built around Deena G’s emotive vocals, delicate piano, and sweeping orchestral strings, “Stay” pairs a direct emotional message with Sun-El Musician’s signature melodic electronic production.
The song captures the universal feeling of wanting to pause time and hold onto a fleeting moment with someone special. Deena G explains that she wrote the track during a period when she wished to extend her limited time with a loved one, resulting in a beautifully relatable Afrohouse anthem.
The Collaboration
The collaboration blossomed after the two artists met during one of Sun-El Musician’s shows in Botswana. Having previously worked with Mpho.Wav, who was closely associated with the producer, Deena G stayed in touch with him.
A year later, during a studio session in Johannesburg, the idea for “Stay” came to life. She credits the acclaimed producer for sharing invaluable songwriting advice: focusing heavily on the melody over the lyrics, as the melody is what truly connects with audiences.
Introducing Transcend
“Stay” is the perfect introduction to Transcend, a debut EP deeply shaped by Deena G’s personal experiences of love, attachment, difficult endings, and moving forward.
The project effortlessly pairs her vulnerable songwriting with vibrant South African electronic sounds, featuring a stellar lineup of producers including Sun-El Musician, Frigid Armadillo, BlaQRhythm, and Ed-Ward.
Moving forward, fans can expect exciting new collaborations for the festive season as she explores a fresh sonic direction with European producers. Through it all, she remains dedicated to her Persian roots and her profound love for the South African Afrohouse sound, with hopes of releasing a full-length album next year.
