After years of writing, refining and holding on to songs while building their music career from the ground up, South African twin duo SaxbyTwins are ready to share more of their story.
Their debut EP, It Started Like This, is out today, bringing together a collection of love-themed pop and folk-pop songs that reflect their growth as artists.

Why SaxbyTwins Decided the Time Was Now
For identical twin brothers Kyle and Wayde Saxby, there comes a point when the music you have spent years creating needs to find its way into the world.
With a growing catalogue of songs they are proud of, the brothers decided it was time to stop holding back and start sharing what they have been working towards.
It Started Like This is the result, a collection that blends different sounds, influences and expressions of love while documenting two artists who have kept learning, maturing and developing their musical identity.
“We’ve hit a point in our careers where we are accumulating and building a catalogue of songs we’re extremely proud of,” the twins explain. “So instead of holding onto all of them, we believe now is the time. This is our first EP, which is special to us.”
A Snapshot of Growth
The title reflects that sense of progress. Love is the common thread running through the EP, but the songs explore different genres and meanings, offering a snapshot of where the brothers are right now rather than trying to define a sound they are still discovering.
“The songs on this EP symbolise different genres and meanings, and they display our growth as artists within our journey,” they say. “It hasn’t been easy, but we’ve grown so much over the last few years, kept learning, maturing, and haven’t given up. We believe we’re extremely close to something special, along with our fans.”
Musically, the EP moves between upbeat pop and folk-pop, a genre the twins have increasingly fallen in love with. New listeners get an introduction to the different sides of their songwriting, while existing fans get a broader picture of the music they have been developing.
From TikTok Trend to Debut EP
The way SaxbyTwins create music has evolved considerably since their first official single, “(I Think I’m) Falling For You”. The brothers are now far more involved in shaping their songs from the ground up, developing original ideas and lyrics before working with a producer to bring the arrangements and beats to life.
That willingness to keep learning has become central to their development. Rather than waiting until they feel they have everything figured out, the twins see each release as another step forward, helping them refine their songwriting and understand what connects with their audience.
“There is no point in holding onto music,” they say. “Release your music; it paints a story of growth and symbolises your journey as artists. At the end of the day, you have to believe in yourself, keep going, keep knocking on the door, and you will reach new people. The more you create, the more you evolve.”
It is a philosophy shaped by experience. The brothers first drew widespread attention in 2020, when an early version of “(I Think I’m) Falling For You” gained traction on TikTok. A dance trend helped push the song into the spotlight, and its polished 2022 release went on to top South Africa’s Spotify Viral Top 50 chart.
Over the past two years, they have performed on stages across South Africa, experiences that have strengthened their determination to keep pursuing music. For the brothers, the debut EP is not a finish line but a starting point for what they hope will be a long and evolving career.
Recording at High Seas Studios
The EP was recorded at High Seas Studios with producer Jacques du Plessis, with whom the twins share a strong creative working relationship. Their process starts with melodies and ideas, followed by plenty of back-and-forth on lyrics and concepts until they feel ready to head into the studio.
“We often create the melodies ourselves, come up with the ideas, go back and forth with lyrics, and brainstorm continuously until we believe we have come up with something special,” they explain. “Then we head to the studio, and that’s where the magic happens as a team.”
The result is a debut project that captures a particular moment in their development: the songs they have written, the influences they have explored and the confidence they have gained by continuing to put their music out into the world.
What Comes Next for SaxbyTwins
For the twins, one of the most rewarding parts of releasing music is seeing the role it plays in other people’s lives. Whether listeners find a song on streaming platforms, hear it live or use it to soundtrack a personal milestone, the brothers hope their music becomes part of stories beyond their own.
“Honestly, we just want people to enjoy our music, to create their own stories through our music, and believe in themselves,” they say. “Hopefully, we receive some more wedding videos where our songs are used, or every video in general that’s sent to us. It’s always such a special feeling.”
While It Started Like This is their first EP, SaxbyTwins are already looking ahead. The brothers have another project in mind, one that will lean more heavily into folk-pop and explore a different thematic direction. For now, though, the focus is on sharing the music they have spent so long creating and letting this first collection stand on its own.
“This EP is the start of many to come,” they say. “The goal is consistency: to just keep going and believing in ourselves.”
With It Started Like This, SaxbyTwins are opening a new chapter in a story built on original songwriting, hard work and the belief that the next opportunity is always worth chasing. The debut EP celebrates how far they have come while offering a glimpse of where they plan to go next.
