As Black Coffee stepped onto the stage of the historic Arènes de Nîmes in France and prepared for a landmark performance at London’s world-renowned O2 Arena alongside a live orchestra, South Africa paused to celebrate one of its greatest cultural ambassadors.
There are moments in music that transcend charts, awards, and sold-out venues. These are the moments that remind us how far a dream can travel. These are more than just concerts. They are milestones. And this was one of those moments.

A Journey of Inspiration and Resilience
For many South Africans, the journey of Black Coffee has been one of inspiration, resilience, and unwavering belief in the power of African creativity.
From local dance floors to some of the world’s most prestigious stages, he has consistently carried the spirit of South African music with him. In doing so, he has introduced global audiences to the richness, sophistication, and soul of our sound.
What makes these performances even more special is the remarkable gathering of artists joining him on this journey. International stars and acclaimed collaborators, including Alicia Keys, Monique Bingham, Portia Monique, Msaki, Real Soul Star, Nduduzo Makhathini, and Nakhane, represent a celebration of musical excellence that transcends borders, genres, and generations.
Celebrating Collective Success
“Black Coffee continues to remind us that South African music belongs on the world’s biggest stages,” said Unati Gwija, spokesperson for the South African Music Awards. “His success is not only personal, it is collective. Every time he performs before international audiences, he carries a piece of South Africa with him and inspires countless artists back home to dream bigger.”
For the South African Music Awards (SAMAs), these moments speak directly to a vision that extends beyond recognition and accolades.
They reflect a growing movement of South African artists who remain deeply rooted in their identity while finding audiences across the globe.
This spirit is captured in the concept of ‘Friends of the SAMAs – Roots to the World Arenas,’ a celebration of artists who honor where they come from while boldly taking South African stories, sounds, and excellence to the world.
Black Coffee is Shaping the Global Soundtrack
The performances by Black Coffee in France and the United Kingdom stand as a powerful reminder that music remains one of South Africa’s greatest exports.
Through his artistry, innovation, and commitment to excellence, he continues to create pathways for future generations of African musicians and creatives.
As the lights shine on these iconic European stages, South Africans everywhere can take pride in knowing that one of our own is not simply performing to the world; he is helping shape the global soundtrack of our time.
The South African music industry, RiSA, and the South African Music Awards congratulate Black Coffee on these historic performances and wish him continued success as he elevates African music on the world stage.
More info about Black Coffee
Nkosinathi Innocent Maphumulo, better known by his stage name Black Coffee, is a world-renowned South African DJ, record producer, and songwriter. Born in 1976 in Durban and raised in the Eastern Cape, his path to global stardom was marked by profound resilience.

Since his breakout in the early 2000s, Black Coffee has become a pioneering figure in “Afropolitan House,” a genre that blends traditional African percussion with contemporary electronic textures.
He gained international acclaim for his sophisticated production style and became the first African artist to win a Grammy Award for Best Dance/Electronic Album for his 2021 release, Subconsciously.
Beyond his music, he is celebrated for his entrepreneurial efforts through his label, Soulistic Music, and his dedicated advocacy for local South African talent and charitable causes.
