South Africa’s healthtech sector has taken a major step forward, with Healthbridge acquiring Nora, an ambient AI tool designed to turn doctor–patient conversations into structured clinical notes.
The move is more than just another tech acquisition. It signals a deeper shift toward integrating artificial intelligence directly into everyday healthcare workflows, helping doctors reclaim valuable time for patient care.

A Smarter Way to Reduce Admin
At its core, Nora addresses one of the biggest pain points in healthcare: administrative overload. By automatically converting consultations into clinical notes, the platform allows doctors to save up to three hours per day on documentation.
That time can then be redirected toward what actually matters, spending more time with patients instead of typing up notes after every consultation.
According to Luis da Silva, the acquisition is a strategic move rather than a simple feature upgrade. Nora is now positioned as a central part of the Healthbridge Clinical platform, not just an add-on.
Rapid Growth and Strong Adoption
The numbers behind Nora’s rollout tell a compelling story. Since launching within the Healthbridge network eight months ago, the platform has seen consistent growth:
- User base increasing by 23% month-on-month
- 85% paid-user retention rate
- 32% monthly growth in processed consultations throughout 2025
Doctors using the system have also reported high satisfaction levels, with an average rating of 4.5 out of 5 and strong recommendation scores.
More importantly, feedback suggests the tool is changing how clinicians interact with patients, allowing for more natural, focused conversations without the distraction of constant note-taking.
Nora: From Startup Idea to Healthtech Breakthrough
Nora was developed by James Gordon and Robert van Biljon, two Cape Town entrepreneurs who originally came from finance backgrounds rather than tech.
Their journey began after the release of GPT-4 in 2023, when they recognised the potential of AI to solve real-world problems.
After initially experimenting with an education-focused tool, they pivoted to healthcare, identifying documentation fatigue as a critical issue for doctors. Partnering with Healthbridge allowed them to test and scale the solution in a real clinical environment.
Improving Patient Care and Reducing Burnout
Beyond saving time, Nora is also improving the quality of clinical records by capturing full consultations more accurately and consistently.
This has a direct impact on one of the biggest challenges in healthcare: physician burnout. Administrative overload has long been a major contributor, and tools like Nora offer a practical way to ease that burden.
Doctors using the platform have reported feeling more present during consultations, with the ability to maintain eye contact and engage more meaningfully with patients.
A New Model for Innovation
Healthbridge is using this acquisition to highlight a broader strategy, partnering with early-stage innovators, testing solutions in real-world settings and then integrating the most effective tools into its ecosystem.
Rather than building everything internally, the company is focusing on collaboration with tech entrepreneurs to accelerate innovation.
For van Biljon, the deal represents a rare and significant milestone within South Africa’s startup ecosystem, where successful exits of this scale are still relatively uncommon.
Africa’s Growing Digital Health Opportunity
The acquisition comes at a time when Africa’s digital health market is expanding rapidly. Growth is being driven by ongoing challenges such as clinician shortages, fragmented systems and the continued reliance on paper-based processes.
AI-powered solutions like Nora offer a way to leapfrog traditional limitations, bringing scalable, efficient tools into environments that need them most.
With strong early adoption and a clear use case, Nora’s integration into the Healthbridge platform could mark the beginning of a much larger shift in how healthcare is delivered across the continent.
