King of the Hill is a landmark American animated sitcom created by Mike Judge and Greg Daniels, which premiered in 1997 and became one of Fox’s longest-running series.

Set in the fictional Texas town of Arlen, the show offers a humorous yet authentic portrayal of the daily lives of the Hill family – Hank, Peggy, and their son Bobby – alongside their eccentric neighbors and community.

King of the Hill

Renowned for its grounded storytelling and relatable blue-collar themes, King of the Hill explores family dynamics, friendship, and the everyday challenges of life with a distinctive mix of warmth and wit.

There’s probably a lot that you don’t know about this show (which happens to be one of my favourite animated shows of all time), but today my aim is to change that…

Here are 18 Interesting Facts you might not know about King of the Hill

1. Hank Hill’s character is based on a Real-Life person

Hank Hill, the quintessential Texan, was modeled after Tom Anderson, a character from Mike Judge’s earlier series Beavis and Butt-Head. Anderson’s perpetually frustrated demeanor mirrored Hank’s mannerisms and even inspired his famous line, “That boy ain’t right.”

2. Boomhauer’s Unique Voice Has an Unusual Origin

Jeff Boomhauer’s rapid, often unintelligible speech was based on an angry, rambling voicemail Mike Judge once received about Beavis and Butt-Head.

3. A Rock Legend Lent His Voice

Tom Petty voiced Lucky Kleinschmidt, Luanne’s husband. Initially intended as a one-time guest role, Petty enjoyed it so much that he became a recurring cast member.

4. Arlen is Based on a Real Town

The show’s fictional setting, Arlen, Texas, draws heavily from Richardson, a Dallas suburb where Mike Judge once lived.

5. Luanne Platter Gets Her Name From a Meal

Hank’s well-meaning but naive niece was named after the “Lu Ann Platter,” a combination meal from the Texas cafeteria chain Luby’s.

6. Stephen Root Went Uncredited

Due to contractual obligations with NBC’s NewsRadio, Stephen Root, the voice of Bill Dauterive, wasn’t credited for his work on King of the Hill during the first few seasons.

7. Dale Gribble Almost Had a Different Voice

Daniel Stern, the narrator of The Wonder Years, was originally offered the role of conspiracy-obsessed exterminator Dale Gribble, which eventually went to Johnny Hardwick.

8. The Theme Song Has a Name

The guitar-driven opening theme is called “Yahoos and Triangles”, performed by Arizona band The Refreshments.

9. A Simpsons Crossover Nearly Happened

Though a full crossover never materialized, the shows came close with a couch gag featuring the Hill family and a brief appearance of Hank and friends in an episode of The Simpsons.

10. Hank Hill Pitched the Show

In a creative twist, Mike Judge and Greg Daniels had an animated Hank Hill pitch the concept of King of the Hill to Fox executives to help secure its greenlight.

11. Writers Were Given Reading Material

To capture Hank’s stoic and principled nature, the writing team was assigned The Death of Common Sense: How Law Is Suffocating America by Philip K. Howard.

12. There have been plenty of Celebrity Guest Voices

Across 13 seasons, the show featured a remarkable line-up of guest stars, including Brad Pitt, Meryl Streep, Johnny Depp, Reese Witherspoon, and Snoop Dogg.

13. Boomhauer’s Job Remained a Mystery

Boomhauer’s occupation was kept secret for much of the series, revealed only in the finale as a Texas Ranger.

14. A Live-Action Spinoff Was Considered

Early discussions explored a live-action spin-off centered on Monsignor Martinez, the charismatic priest from the Hills’ favorite telenovela.

15. The Show’s Initial Cancellation Surprised the Creators

Despite steady ratings, King of the Hill was canceled in 2009 to make way for Seth MacFarlane’s The Cleveland Show. The creators and cast were caught off guard.

16. King of the Hill returned to screens in 2025

The show returned after a 15-year hiatus with its 14th season, premiering on August 4, 2025, exclusively on Hulu in the U.S. and Disney+ internationally as a Star Original.

17. The series picks up eight years after the original run

In the first episode of Season 14 Hank and Peggy returning to a changed Arlen, Texas, after working in Saudi Arabia.

18. The revival garnered 4.4 million views in its first week

This made King of the Hill it the most-watched animated series on Disney+ and Hulu in the past five years. Critics praised the season for successfully recapturing the show’s spirit while updating it for a modern audience.
