As spring arrives on the KZN South Coast, it is the perfect time to rethink the myths that have clung stubbornly to indigenous gardening.
At Renishaw Hills in Scottburgh, Garden Installation and Maintenance Supervisor Amanda Maphumulo has taken aim at four of the biggest misconceptions and shared practical advice for creating a thriving, colourful garden of your own.
Barto van der Merwe, Managing Director of Renishaw Property Developments, says the estate’s gardens offer undeniable proof that indigenous landscaping can be both breathtaking and sustainable.
Designed by celebrated botanist Dr Elsa Pooley and brought to life by Amanda and her horticultural team, these gardens have become a showcase of vibrant coastal biodiversity. Their success is also why the estate regularly hosts the respected Botanical Society Winter Gardens.
Here are 4 Indigenous Plant Myths that are totally bogus
Myth One: Indigenous Gardens Are Boring and Colourless
Amanda has heard this one many times, and she dismisses it immediately. Indigenous plants offer year-round colour when planned properly.
Winter brings the bright oranges and reds of Aloes, spring bursts with the purples and blues of Plectranthus, the glowing yellows of Bulbines and the soft pinks and whites of Watsonias. These plants are not only beautiful, they are perfectly suited to the local climate.

She explains that indigenous gardens do more than look good. They bring life into the space by attracting birds and insects while strengthening the soil and reducing erosion. The plants are hardy and adaptive, though they still appreciate some human care.
Myth Two: Indigenous Gardens Do Not Attract Birdlife and Butterflies
In reality, they attract an abundance of wildlife. Renishaw Hills is a living example of this harmony. Residents often report sightings of mongoose families moving through the gardens, morning calls from Natal spurfowl and flashes of Klaas’s cuckoos in the trees. Amanda says the estate’s commitment to environmental care has helped transform it into a sanctuary for local creatures.
Myth Three: Indigenous Gardens Take Care of Themselves Completely
Amanda is the first to acknowledge that while these plants are adapted to their environment, they still need the right conditions. A little mindful maintenance goes a long way. She advises gardeners to begin with well-composted, healthy soil; choose plants that flower at different times to maintain colour throughout the year; and water and feed plants with moderation. The goal is balance, not neglect.
Myth Four: Indigenous Gardens Must Look Wild and Untidy
An indigenous garden can be beautifully structured and elegant. The secret lies in understanding how the plants grow and pairing them thoughtfully. Renishaw Hills provides this at every home on the estate, where each garden is professionally designed with a mix of succulents, grasses, shrubs and flowering species that shift with the seasons.
A Legacy Rooted in Rehabilitation
Renishaw Hills’ approach to gardening carries a deeper ecological purpose. Working with Dr Pooley and rehabilitation specialist Geoff Nichols, the estate has embarked on an extensive programme to remove alien vegetation and restore natural plant life. The initiative has turned former sugarcane land into diverse grasslands, wetlands and forest pockets rich with life. It has also created employment for many local horticulturalists.
Beyond its gardens, Renishaw Hills offers retirees a coastal lifestyle with thoughtful amenities. Residents benefit from cost-effective levies that cover exterior maintenance, garden services, fibre WiFi, security and access to healthcare. The estate also offers more than twenty active clubs, a growing range of community facilities, scenic hiking and biking trails, pristine beaches and a reliable independent water supply.
