2025 was a year of profound turbulence and transformation – from geopolitical shifts and cultural milestones to devastating natural disasters and groundbreaking technological leaps.

This article dives into standout events that defined the past 12 months, capturing the highs of human achievement, the lows of conflict and loss, and everything in between.

Whether it’s the return of a polarizing leader to the White House or the thrill of record-breaking entertainment wins, these moments remind us of the unpredictable rhythm of our world. Join me as I reflect on what made 2025 unforgettable.

Here are 25 Notable Events in 2025

1. On the 1st of January a terrorist attack happened on Bourbon Street in New Orleans in the USA left 14 people dead and dozens injured after a vehicle drove into New Year’s Eve crowds.

2. On the 7th of January devastating wildfires, including the Palisades and Eaton fires, tore through Southern California in the USA, destroying more than 16,000 structures, killing 29 people, and causing billions in damage.

3. On the 20th of January, Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th U.S. President, returning to office for a second, non-consecutive term marked by sweeping policy changes, including new tariffs and agency shake-ups.

4. On the 2nd of February, Beyoncé won Album of the Year at the Grammys for Cowboy Carter, becoming the first Black woman to take home Best Country Album and extending her record-breaking total to 35 Grammy wins.

5. On the 9th of February, the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 40–22 to win Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans.

6. On the 2nd of March, Anora claimed Best Picture at the 97th Academy Awards, earning a total of five Oscars on the night.

7. On the 20th of March, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake striked Cebu island in Phillipines, killing 71 people and injuring over 559, causing widespread damage.

8. On the 21st of March, a major power outage from a substation fire shut down London’s Heathrow Airport completely, disrupting over 1,300 flights and affecting 270,000 passengers.

9. On the 21st of April, Pope Francis died at the age of 88, bringing an end to his 12-year papacy.

10. On the 8th of May, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was elected Pope Leo XIV, making history as the first American pope.

11. In June 2025, South Africa won the ICC World Test Championship final against Australia, its first major cricket title since 1998.

12. On the 14th of June, Widespread “No Kings” protests erupted across the U.S. and internationally in opposition to President Trump’s policies, drawing more than five million participants.

13. On the 22nd of June, the USA launched strikes on Iranian nuclear sites amid escalating Israel–Iran tensions, with a ceasefire following shortly afterward.

14. On the 7th of August, OpenAI released ChatGPT-5, marking a major leap forward in AI reasoning and autonomous capabilities.

15. On the 26th of August, Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce announced their engagement via Instagram.

16. On the 10th of October, a ceasefire in the Israel–Hamas war took effect after two years of conflict, following a US-brokered agreement.

17. On the 1st of November The Los Angeles Dodgers won the World Series, defeating the Toronto Blue Jays in a dramatic seven-game series.

18. In November 2025, South Africa hosted the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, the first time on African soil, resulting in the Johannesburg Declaration on economic cooperation and climate initiatives, though marred by a U.S. boycott.

The country also advocated for Global South interests in BRICS and launched a Critical Minerals Strategy to boost clean energy jobs.

19. On the 10th of December, Australia introduced a nationwide ban on social media use for those under 16, impacting platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, X, and TikTok.

20. The Springboks enjoyed a dominant 2025, winning 13 of 15 Tests under Rassie Erasmus and finishing the year as the world’s top-ranked team for a third straight season. Highlights included record wins over New Zealand in Wellington and Wales, an unbeaten end-of-year tour featuring victories over France and Ireland, and successful defences of the Rugby Championship, Freedom Cup and Nelson Mandela Challenge Plate.

Individual brilliance shone through, notably Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu’s record points haul, while South African rugby thrived more broadly with Junior Springboks and Blitzboks claiming major international titles.

21. Rugby’s Currie Cup Premier Division was won by the Griquas in South Africa. They beat the Lions 27-25 in the final at Ellis Park to claim the title. The victory marked a historic Currie Cup win for the Griquas, ending a long drought and adding to their provincial rugby legacy.

22. The United Rugby Championship (URC) was won by Leinster Rugby, who beat the Vodacom Bulls 32–7 in the Grand Final at Croke Park in Dublin on 14 June 2025 to lift the title. Leinster’s triumph marked their first URC title since 2021 and continued their strong history in the competition.

23. The English Premier League (EPL) title for the 2024‑25 season (concluding in May 2025) was won by Liverpool, claiming their second Premier League crown and 20th top‑flight English league title overall. They clinched the championship with a dominant campaign and secured the trophy well before the season ended.

24. Crystal Palace won the 2025 FA Cup, beating Manchester City 1‑0 in the final at Wembley Stadium to secure the club’s first ever major trophy. Eberechi Eze scored the decisive goal, and goalkeeper Dean Henderson made a crucial penalty save to help seal the historic victory.

25. This year was dubbed the “year of the octopus” along England’s south coast as scientists and wildlife trusts reported unprecedented octopus numbers – far above typical levels – linked to warmer seas and shifting ecosystems.
