Potchefstroom is one of the biggest cities in the North West Province of South Africa. The city is nicknamed Potch. There’s probably a lot that you don’t know about Potch, but today my aim is to change that.

Here are 15 Interesting Facts about Potchefstroom

1. Potchefstroom was founded in 1838 and was the second oldest settlement of people of European descent (behind Klerskdorp) in the old Transvaal province of South Africa.

2. The city served as the 1st capital for the South African Republic (Zuid Afrikaanse Republiek).

3. There are various origins that are claimed for the origin of the name Potchefstroom. Firstly it is said to be: ‘Potgieter’ + ‘Chef’ + ‘stroom’. Which attributes the name to the Voortrekker leader and town father Andries Potgieter, ‘chef’ an indication of leader of the emigrants and the ‘stroom’ referring to the Mooi River.

Although others believe that this is the most widely recognized source of the name, it would be strange for the Voortrekker to refer to a leader as ‘chef’ or ‘chief’ as these are not words frequently used in Afrikaans at the day.

And others attribute the name as having come from the word ‘Potscherf’, meaning broken pot, due to the cracks that appear in the soil of the Mooi River Valley during drought resembling a broken pot.

4. In 2006 the local municipality decided on a name change for the city, favouring ‘Tlokwe’ as the new name. The municipality changed its name to the “Tlokwe City Council“, but the city’s name remains “Potchefstroom”. There is still a case hanging regarding the name change, which is primarily opposed by a local community organisation.

5. Potchefstroom’s 2023 population is estimated at 196,420. In 2001, the population of the city was 118,070. Potchefstroom has grown by 2.34% annually.

6. Potchefstroom is known as a city of expertise / an academic city and is home to 5 tertiary institutions (The North-West University, Potchefstroom College of Education, Technical College Potchefstroom, Agricultural Centre and Potchefstroom Akademie) and 30 schools.

7. The North West provincial headquarters of 17 of the most important sports are situated in the city.

8. The Witrand Mental Institute was the second Government institution for psychiatric patients and was opened in 1923 (behind Valkenberg in the Western Cape).

9. Dome Bergland Nature Park (near the city) is the site of a meteorite impact some 2 000 million years ago. This is a fascinating geographic phenomenon in that it is different in shape and vegetation from its surrounding areas. The impact created the richest gold reef in the world.

Many trails take visitors to this remarkable natural feature and many activities are on offer, including hiking, riverrafting, canoeing, mountain climbing, abseiling, mountain biking and fly fishing.

10. The city has hosted the yearly Aardklop Arts Festival (featuring drama productions and performances by mostly Afrikaans artists) since 1998. The festival attracts more than 50,000 visitors to Potchefstroom every year and is held in late September.

11. The city has the longest avenue of oak trees in South Africa.

12. South African Grand Prix motorcycle racer Brad Binder was born in Potchefstroom in 1995. He is most-known for winning the 2016 Moto3 World Championship. In November 2019 he was confirmed as Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider in MotoGP class for the 2020 season, replacing Johann Zarco who had abandoned his factory ride earlier during that year.

13. Situated by the scenic Mooi River in Potchefstroom, lies the expansive OPM Prozesky Bird Sanctuary, spanning 70 hectares. This haven is a cherished destination for avian enthusiasts worldwide, drawn to its diverse array of remarkable bird species.

To cater to newcomers eager to delve into the world of birdwatching, Birdlife Wesvaal organizes special open days on the first Saturday of each month. Accompanied by knowledgeable guides, visitors are led through the sanctuary, immersing themselves in bird lore and gaining a deeper understanding of environmental conservation.

For those seeking a more dynamic birding encounter, the sanctuary offers two captivating hiking trails, allowing participants to actively engage with the feathered inhabitants of the reserve.

14. Route 96 Brewery is a beloved local establishment in South Africa, operated by a passionate family who wholeheartedly embraces the art of brewing exceptional beer. Nestled just beyond the borders of Potchefstroom, their facility is meticulously designed to produce seven distinct and extraordinary beers, using only the finest available ingredients.

In addition to their brewing endeavors, the brewery provides a charming venue for patrons to indulge in beer tasting and immerse themselves in the tranquil ambiance of their family-friendly small-holding. Visitors are invited to savor the picturesque vistas and observe the flourishing wildlife that envelops the brewery, ensuring a memorable and captivating experience for all.
