Bad Peter have been part of the SA Music scene for the past few years, but sadly I only saw them live for the first time earlier this year. I can’t believe that I missed them every single time before. Luckily I saw them at Mieliepop 2017 as well to make up for it.
Bad Peter have been living and breathing music from a young age. They have a passion for acoustic guitar playing, and live at the crossroads where country, folk and blues meet. They are excited to see where this path will lead them and they believe they have only just started what they hope to be a lifelong affair with music. They are one of the acts who will be performing at Park Acoustics this coming Sunday (the 30th of July 2017).
I had a chat with them about this and a few other things, this is what they had to say:
Where does the name “Bad Peter” come from?
The name contains our actual names. PG (Bad)enhorst and Alwyn Petrus (Peter) Bekker. We first played as The Swinging Door (lyrics from our song Cecilia) for a little while and then realised that a band also selling their music on iTunes has already taken the name. So we came up with “Bad Peter”.
If you could colab with a South African artist, who would it be and why?
We’re always in awe of the sounds our friends in Georgetown create! We love performing
alongside them and we always do a song or two together at the end. Too much fun!
What is the funniest thing that’s ever happened to you guys during a live set?
About two years or so ago we were playing in this pub in Centurion. Next moment this guy came out of nowhere, jamming out on his electric guitar. We figured he went and fetched it in his car when he saw us playing. The guitar was obviously not plugged in. He was so drunk, having the time of his life jamming out in front of the stage!
What can music lovers expect from your set at Park Acoustics this weekend?
We’re absolutely stoked to be back at Park Acoustics this year and we can’t wait to feel that special energy! We’re so excited to be releasing our new EP in September, and we’ll definitely be playing the new songs to the wonderful people of Park Acoustics!
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Bad Peter for this interview and I wish them all of the best with their set on Sunday and their future musical endeavors.
If you’re not familiar with their sound, crank up their song “On The River” below.
