Johnny Clegg’s extraordinary musical legacy took on a new life with the release of Scatterlings: Johnny Clegg Reimagined, a landmark album featuring fresh interpretations by some of South Africa’s most celebrated contemporary artists.
Featuring bold new takes by artists including Sjava, Sun-El Musician, Jesse Clegg, Msaki, Zakes Bantwini, Tresor, Zolani Mahola, Thakzin, Beatenberg, Simmy, MUZI, J’Something, Big Zulu, and many more, the album celebrates a catalog that helped shape the sound, identity, and cultural fabric of South Africa.
Rather than recreating the original recordings, the album invites each artist to reinterpret the music through their own creative lens – ranging from Afro-house and soul to folk, pop, Afropop, and electronic influences -demonstrating the remarkable versatility and enduring relevance of Clegg’s songwriting.
A Generational Conversation
Conceived as a celebration of one of South Africa’s most important musical catalogs, the project reflects Johnny Clegg’s lifelong belief that music has the power to unite people across cultures and languages.
At the heart of the release is a creative partnership between Jesse Clegg and acclaimed singer-songwriter Msaki, whose shared vision honors the past while looking toward the future.
As Jesse Clegg shares, the songs were never meant to stand still, and hearing this incredible group of artists reinterpret them with honesty and respect has been deeply moving.
Msaki adds that the project was designed to feel less like a traditional tribute and more like a conversation between generations of South African musicians.
