A lot of you reading this post have probably owned a pair of sneakers. Chances are that you don’t know much about their history and that you don’t know interesting facts about them, but today my aim is to change that.
In case you did not know, sneakers (also called trainers, athletic shoes, tennis shoes, gym shoes, kicks, sport shoes, flats, running shoes, or runners) are shoes primarily designed for sports or other forms of physical exercise, but which are also widely used for everyday casual wear.
Here are 15 Interesting Facts You Didn’t Know About Sneakers
1. Sneakers were first developed in the late 1800s as a rubber-soled shoe designed for playing tennis or croquet.
2. The term “sneaker” originated because the rubber soles allowed the wearer to move silently and “sneak up” on others.
3. The first major sneaker company was Converse, which was founded in 1908.
4. Nike, one of the most popular sneaker brands in the world today, was founded in 1964 as Blue Ribbon Sports and changed its name to Nike in 1971. The name “Nike” comes from the Greek goddess of victory.
5. Nike Dunk Low is a popular sneaker model produced by Nike. The Nike Dunk Low was first introduced in 1985 as a basketball sneaker, and it has since become a cultural icon and a staple in sneaker culture. The shoe features a low-cut design with a padded tongue and collar for added comfort and support.
6. The Air Jordan, a line of basketball shoes created by Nike in collaboration with Michael Jordan, was introduced in 1985 and has become one of the most popular and iconic sneaker brands of all time.
7. Sneakerheads are collectors who are passionate about sneakers and often spend large amounts of money to acquire rare or limited-edition pairs.
8. Mark “Mayor” Farese is seen as one of the OGs of the sneakerhead community. Mayor boasts a massive collection of 4000 thousand pairs of sneakers worth more than $1 million dollars.
9. The most expensive pair of sneakers ever sold is the Nike “Moon Shoe,” which sold for $437,500 at auction in 2019.
10. The Nike Air Max, first released in 1987, was the first sneaker to feature visible air cushioning in the sole.
11. The Adidas Superstar, introduced in 1969, was the first low-top basketball shoe to feature an all-leather upper and has become a classic sneaker style.
12. Adidas was founded in 1949 by Adolf Dassler in Herzogenaurach, Germany. The company’s name comes from its founder’s nickname, “Adi,” and the first three letters of his last name, “Das.”
13. The Chuck Taylor All-Star, introduced by Converse in 1917, has been worn by basketball players, musicians, and fashion icons and is still popular today.
14. During World War II, Converse shifted its production to manufacturing boots, rubber protective suits, and other military gear. The company also created a line of sneakers for soldiers called the “Converse Army Boots.”
15. In 2003, Converse was acquired by Nike, Inc. and became a subsidiary of the company. Despite this, Converse has continued to operate as a separate brand and has maintained its own unique identity and product line.
