In cast you didn’t know, The Last Dinner Party is a British indie rock band that has captivated audiences worldwide with their theatrical baroque-pop sound and opulent aesthetic.

There’s probably a lot that you don’t know about this band, but today my aim is to change that…

Here are 16 Interesting Facts You Didn’t Know about The Last Dinner Party

1. The Last Dinner Party was formed in London in 2021.

2. Abigail Morris (lead vocals), Lizzie Mayland (vocals, guitar), Emily Roberts (lead guitar, mandolin, flute), Georgia Davies (bass), and Aurora Nishevci (keyboards, vocals) are the members of the band.

3. The Last Dinner Party performs without a permanent drummer, but is currently joined by Casper Miles during live performances.

4. The band’s origins trace back to 2018 when Morris, Davies, and Mayland met during Freshers’ Week at King’s College London. Their initial bond formed through frequent attendance at gigs at The Windmill venue, where they were inspired by the local music scene featuring bands like Black Midi and HMLTD.

5. Originally called “The Dinner Party,” the name was inspired by “the idea of a huge debauched dinner party where people came together to celebrate with a hedonistic banquet”. They later changed it to “The Last Dinner Party” to avoid confusion with the jazz supergroup Dinner Party.

6. The COVID-19 pandemic initially hindered their progress, with the band struggling to find rehearsal time during lockdowns. They didn’t perform live until their first gig at The George in London in November 2021. Despite these early challenges, their rise was meteoric once they began performing regularly.

7. The Last Dinner Party has established a unique place in the modern music scene with their signature baroque-pop flair. Their sound has been hailed for its “art-rock bombast” and strikingly ornate aesthetic. The band fuses powerful vocals, electrifying guitar work, and orchestral arrangements with an audacious sense of drama and theatricality.

8. Their inspirations stretch across eras and styles, drawing comparisons to icons like David Bowie, Fleetwood Mac, Kate Bush, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Roxy Music, ABBA, Queen, Sparks, Florence and the Machine, and Warpaint. The band themselves point to Queen, St. Vincent, Chappell Roan and Lana Del Rey as key creative influences.

9. Abigail Morris describes The Last Dinner Party’s aesthetic as a reflection of internet culture, explaining, “Our whole sound and visual world is a perfect example of a band raised online… it’s a copy of a copy, borrowing from different movements.” This creative approach produces music that channels 19th-century literature, aestheticism, and decadence, yet feels unmistakably contemporary.

10. The Last Dinner Party’s big break arrived with their debut single “Nothing Matters,” released in April 2023. The track climbed into the UK’s top 20 and later featured on the EA Sports FC 24 soundtrack. However, their rapid ascent was largely fueled by a viral live video of “Nothing Matters” recorded at The Windmill in Brixton in 2022.

Check out the music video for the track below:

11. Their meteoric rise carried through 2023 with a string of major accolades. In December, they took home the Rising Star Brit Award, joining the ranks of past winners like Adele, Florence + The Machine, Sam Smith, and Ellie Goulding. Soon after, they topped the BBC Sound of 2024 poll – becoming the first guitar band to claim the title since Haim in 2013.

12. Prelude to Ecstasy, the band’s debut studio album, arrived on February 2, 2024. Produced by James Ford (known for his work with Arctic Monkeys and Florence + The Machine), the album was finished three months before “Nothing Matters” had even been released.

It debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart and became the country’s highest first-week-selling debut album in nine years. Critics praised it widely, earning a Metacritic score of 84 out of 100 – signifying “universal acclaim.”

13. Prelude to Ecstasy explores into themes of sexuality, identity, and power through tracks such as “Sinner,” “My Lady of Mercy,” “Caesar on a TV Screen,” and “The Feminine Urge.” Its impact was further recognized with a 2024 Mercury Prize nomination, solidifying the band’s reputation as one of Britain’s most exciting emerging acts.

14. The Last Dinner Party has earned a reputation as a powerful live act, celebrated for their theatrical shows and lavish baroque-inspired attire. Their performances blend operatic elegance with genuine warmth, using lighting and striking tableau-style moments to turn large stages into immersive, story-driven spectacles.

15. The band has opened for legendary acts such as The Rolling Stones at Hyde Park (July 2022), Hozier on his European tour, and First Aid Kit on select UK dates. They’ve also graced major festival stages, including Glastonbury, Latitude, and BST Hyde Park. Their live shows are said to evoke a “primal, euphoric state of being” that ultimately resonates with the audience.

16. Despite their brief time in the spotlight, The Last Dinner Party has made a significant mark on the music industry. They were named Best New Artist at the 2025 BRIT Awards, using the moment to champion independent music venues, calling them “the lifeblood of the music industry” and warning that “they are dying.”
