4. The band released several singles before their debut album, A Guide to Love, Loss & Desperation, was released in 2007. Their debut album reached number 11 on the UK album chart.

5. The Wombats released their second album, This Modern Glitch, in 2011, which featured production from Eric Valentine, Butch Walker, and Jacknife Lee. The album included the Top 40 single “Tokyo (Vampires & Wolves).”

6. In 2015, the band released their third album, Glitterbug, which had a synth-heavy sound and was produced by Mark Crew. Glitterbug was a commercial success in the UK and Australia, and marked the band’s first chart entry in the USA.

7. The Wombats released their fourth album, Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life, in 2018. It was produced by Mark Crew and Catherine Marks and included the singles “Turn,” “Lemon to a Knife Fight,” and “Cheetah Tongue.” The album peaked at number three in the U.K. and hit the Billboard 200.

8. In May 2021, The Wombats returned with the release of “Method to the Madness,” the first single from their fifth studio album, Fix Yourself, Not the World. The album was eventually released in January 2022 and topped the UK Albums chart. It was produced by Jacknife Lee, Mike Crossey, Gabe Simon, and others.

9. Paul McCartney offered to produce the band’s second album, but it didn’t happen.

10. Two band members have been in car crashes, one in Dubai and one in the UK.

11. The band used to party hard, but not anymore due to bigger productions and the need to be in a solid state of mind. The band also doesn’t like to argue.

12. Their song “Let’s Dance to Joy Division” is about people having fun to depressing songs and how music can lift them out of the ridiculousness of life. In February 2008 this won the NME Award for Best Dancefloor Filler. The song is actually a tribute to the iconic post-punk band Joy Division and their famous song “Love Will Tear Us Apart”.

13. Murphy wrote “Greek Tragedy” just after one of his relationships ended. In the song he compares their romance to an exhilarating performance that will only end in heartbreak. The lyrics are inspired by the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. The song was nominated for the Best Track award at the 2015 Q Awards and was also included in NME’s list of the best tracks of the year.

14. “Anti-D” is a slow, melancholy The Wombats track with introspective lyrics that deal with depression and the difficulty of coping with mental illness. Matthew Murphy has suffered with anxiety and depression since he was a teenager. He wrote the song. It was released on their debut album in 2007.

15. The band’s song “Backfire at the Disco” was released in 2007 as the third single from their debut album. The song features a fast-paced, danceable rhythm and catchy guitar riffs, with lyrics that describe a failed attempt at a night out. The music video for the song, directed by Price James, features the band members in various comical scenarios, including a failed attempt to rob a convenience store and a dance-off with a group of elderly women.

16.  Their song “Tokyo (Vampires & Wolves)” features a fast-paced, upbeat tempo with catchy guitar riffs, driving percussion, and pulsing synths. The lyrics are about a wild night out in Tokyo, with references to vampires and werewolves.

17. The band’s song “Jump Into The Fog” features a driving beat, catchy guitar riffs, and a singalong chorus. The lyrics are about taking risks and facing uncertainty in life, with references to storms and shipwrecks. The music video for the song, directed by Tom Morris, features the band members in various surreal and comical scenarios, including a giant hamster ball, a pig costume, and a boxing match.

18. The band’s name was taken from the band members calling each other “wombat” when they made stupid mistakes in their student accommodation. The Wombats‘ songs felt rooted in student culture.

19, The Fix Yourself, Not The World album was started in 2019 when all members of the band were together in Los Angeles and wrote several songs. Due to the COVID-19 lockdowns, the album was recorded remotely, with each band member in a different location, and the producers were sent their parts separately. The band members pushed themselves musically and explored new genres on the album.

20. The Wombats appeared in a 2008 episode of the Australian music quiz show Spicks and Specks, on which Matthew Murphy was a contestant. Later in the episode, he appeared with his bandmates in a segment where bassist Knudsen sang the Postman Pat theme song in his native Norwegian.

21. The Wombats’ latest album, Oh! The Ocean, was released on February 14, 2025, via AWAL. Recorded over two years, the album was crafted during a period of personal and creative evolution for the band. Frontman Matthew “Murph” Murphy described it as a reflection of their desire to avoid stagnating creatively, with a focus on pushing their sound forward while retaining their signature style.

22. “Blood on the Hospital Floor” was released as the lead single for Oh! The Ocean in late 2024, accompanied by a music video featuring surreal imagery of a hospital-turned-dancefloor. The song received airplay on BBC Radio 1 and was praised for its catchy hook and emotional depth.
