Virgin Music Group has officially announced the global signing of Zolani Mahola, one of Africa’s most distinctive and celebrated voices.

This landmark partnership unites a visionary storyteller with an international team, setting the stage for a bold new chapter that aims to amplify her sound and storytelling on a global scale.

The collaboration is built on shared momentum, with a major project on the horizon designed to introduce an evolutionary shift in her musical journey.

Virgin Music Group will be working closely with the artist’s management team to drive what promises to be a standout release in the contemporary African music landscape.

Zolani Mahola has a Rich Legacy of International Success

Zolani Mahola has long been established as a powerhouse in South African entertainment. As the former lead singer of the legendary group Freshlyground, she spent 17 years touring internationally and sharing stages with global icons such as Stevie Wonder, BB King, Aretha Franklin, and Yo-Yo Ma.

Zolani Mahola also famously contributed to the global blockbuster anthem “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)” alongside Colombian superstar Shakira.

Her artistic footprint extends far beyond traditional music releases. Her multidisciplinary career features performances at Carnegie Hall, a Fleur du Cap Award for Best Actress, and a South African Music Award (SAMA) for Best Produced Album for her solo project, Thetha Mama.

Additionally, she serves as an ambassador for the SeaChange Project and co-created the Tribeca-awarded podcast Back To The Water with Oscar-winning director Pippa Ehrlich of My Octopus Teacher fame.

The duo is currently working on a feature-length documentary detailing Zolani Mahola’s life and music, scheduled for release later this year.

Bold Sonic Evolution with “XhosaNostra”

The first official fruit of this new global partnership is the upcoming single “XhosaNostra”, set to drop on 4 June 2026.

The track is described as an explosive and accessible Gqom record, marking a fearless reintroduction that is deeply rooted in her Xhosa identity while pushing decisively into modern electronic territory.

The track carries immense emotional and cultural weight, featuring the late Bravo Le Roux in one of his final studio recordings.

The production was handled by London-based, Grammy-nominated producer Hannah V, whose sophisticated touch brings a rich, international edge to the heavy South African beats.

Anticipation Builds for Upcoming Album “People Power”

“XhosaNostra” provides the very first glimpse into her highly anticipated studio album, People Power. The upcoming body of work promises to be a genre-spanning, forward-looking collection that blends rich African heritage, global sonics, and potent storytelling with world-class songwriting and production values.

With a powerful global distribution and marketing engine now backing her solo endeavors, this signing marks the definitive start of a new era for Zolani Mahola as she continues to redefine the boundaries of contemporary African music.
