Some songs arrive fully formed, while others take years to find their perfect moment. For South African pop singer-songwriter Cailyn Shelby, the latter is true for her intoxicating new single, “Addicted To You”.
Born from the crackle of a fire, shelved for years, and rediscovered on a long-haul flight, the track has finally been unleashed.
“Addicted To You” began its journey several years ago in an unlikely setting. While taking a short music production course, Cailyn Shelby recorded the sound of a crackling fire, chopped it up, and built a beat around it.
After mumbling random melodies into her phone, she picked up her guitar the next day and wrote the foundation of the song.
Cailyn Shelby eventually developed a demo with acclaimed producer Daniel Baron. However, the track did not quite fit the sonic landscape of her debut album, Growing Pains, and felt slightly unfinished.
It was shelved in a digital vault of voice notes until a long-haul flight between the UK and South Africa prompted a rediscovery. Listening through old demos, she realized she had become addicted to “Addicted To You” and could no longer let it gather dust.
Upon returning to South Africa, she messaged Daniel Baron with a simple realization: the song had to be finished. Returning to the studio alongside Marc Ronin, the team pulled the track apart and rebuilt it from the ground up, recording new vocals and reshaping the arrangement. The result is a polished, highly energetic anthem that simply needed a little time and growth before it was ready to shine.
At its core, “Addicted To You” explores the magnetic push and pull of the early stages of a relationship. It captures the euphoria of someone consuming your every thought, making the frustrations of everyday life disappear.
However, beneath the rush lies a quiet awareness that the romance might actually be dangerous. This tension is brilliantly mirrored in the production. Gritty guitars and a driving bassline highlight the song’s darker, obsessive edge, while polished pop melodies keep the energy exhilarating rather than heavy.
