Rising alternative artist Carla Franco has returned with a striking new single, “Version of Me” – a raw and emotionally unfiltered release that marks the beginning of her next chapter. The track serves as the first taste of her upcoming third studio album, set to arrive on 25 April 2026.
With “Version of Me,” Carla Franco leans into a more stripped-back and intimate sound, allowing her storytelling to take centre stage. The result is a powerful exploration of identity, accountability, and the emotional strain of being misunderstood in relationships.
The track dives into the tension between self-awareness and self-preservation, unpacking the weight of expectations placed on her by others. Through candid and cutting lyricism, she confronts cycles of love and loss, while firmly rejecting the idea of being reshaped to fit someone else’s narrative.
Letting the lyrics do the heavy lifting
At its core, “Version of Me” is driven by honesty. The song captures a sense of emotional conflict, balancing vulnerability with defiance. It builds toward a haunting declaration of independence, reinforcing Carla’s refusal to conform to outside perceptions.
This shift in approach marks a noticeable evolution from her earlier work, which often featured layered, genre-blending production. Here, the focus is clear: less distraction, more truth.

A new chapter after LAYERS
The single follows the success of her sophomore album LAYERS, which earned a nomination at the South African Music Awards for Best Alternative Album. Now, Carla steps into a new phase of her career defined by emotional depth, creative confidence, and a willingness to be completely exposed in her music.
She describes the upcoming album as her most vulnerable work yet, shaped by personal experiences and a journey toward reclaiming her voice. “Version of Me” stands as the starting point of that process — both an acknowledgement of past struggles and a declaration of self-acceptance.
Turning lived experience into powerful storytelling
Born with hearing loss, Carla has built her career on transforming personal challenges into deeply resonant music. With this latest release, she continues to carve out a unique space within South Africa’s alternative scene.
“Version of Me” doesn’t just introduce a new album – it signals a reclaiming of identity. It’s honest, confronting, and unapologetically real.
