Following her SAMA-nominated sophomore album Layers, Carla Franco returns to the alternative scene with her third studio album, A Funeral For My Grief.
This isn’t just a collection of songs; it is a conceptually rich, chronological documentation of the unraveling of love and identity.
Born with hearing loss, Franco has always occupied a unique space in music where sound is felt as much as it is heard. On this record, that perspective translates into visceral storytelling and a striking level of emotional clarity.
The album serves as a guided journey through the five stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. It explores a heavy, often unspoken paradox—the reality that grieving someone who is still alive can be even more consuming than mourning those we have lost forever.
The Catalyst: “Alone in Purley”
At the emotional heart of the project is the lead single, “Alone in Purley.” Capturing a raw moment of abandonment in a foreign country, the track serves as the epicenter of the album’s narrative.
It sets the stage for a story about heartbreak that was born from the collapse of a deeply significant relationship, a catalyst that forced Carla Franco to confront the weight of her own vulnerability.
The tracklist for the album includes: “Bad Love,” “My Love,” “Alone in Purley,” “Hot Mess” (Live Redemption), “Hot Mess,” “If I Wanted You” (featuring Sophia Frank), “Version Of Me,” “Honest,” “Other People,” and “Finally” (featuring NTU2KO).
Aside from intentional collaborations with Sophia Frank and NTU2KO, A Funeral For My Grief was written and composed entirely by Carla Franco
This independence highlights her strength as a songwriter and her refusal to compromise on her narrative vision. Sonically, the album favors restraint over high-gloss production. By leaning into minimalism, Carla Franco ensures that her lyrics land with full emotional weight, turning each song into a lived moment rather than a mere performance.
While A Funeral For My Grief solidifies her position as a leader in the South African alternative landscape, Franco is already looking toward the global stage. Holding dual citizenship and an EU passport, she is strategically positioned to bring her art to an international audience with agility and intent. She isn’t waiting for validation; she is building a body of work designed to resonate across borders.
Ultimately, this album is a reckoning and a release. It marks a bold declaration of growth from an artist who continues to prioritize emotional truth over algorithmic strategy.
