Being a blogger for almost 7 years has exposed me to a huge variety of interesting topics, videos, photos, places and ideologies and it’s not very often that I’m exposed to a project that makes you believe in the potential of South Africa.
Now you’re probably wondering what am I talking about, right? Well, in a nutshell I’m praising the incredible emergency and rescue service personnel we have in our country today. These individuals put their lives on the line for others on a daily basis and it’s where the inspiration behind the Centrum Guardians campaign comes from.
The Centrum Guardians are individuals who go above and beyond the call of duty in order to save lives. Knowing that there are people whose job it is to help ordinary citizens when they need it most, invites a welcome sense of security. Imagine the strain of dealing with horrific accidents and other emergency situations with calmness and absolute precision every single day. Men and women are answering a deep-seated calling to help with little recognition are a rare breed these days and trying to anticipate the unknown and training for every possible situation is demanding and taxing to say the least.
Over the past five years, the Centrum Guardians campaign has raised nearly R3 million worth of training from sponsors for Emergency and Rescue Services personnel. Invaluable training is provided, including fighting petrochemical fires, training in new car technology and advanced extrication techniques and the latest in emergency medical protocols. Training helps to avert and in some cases, minimise disasters.
To give you an idea, watch the ALS Paramedic Michael Callow’s story below. He was on his way to the Wadeville Fire Station when he heard gunshots. He called it in and headed to the scene. Moments later he found himself summoning all his medical training and determination to save the lives of innocent bystanders and police officers after one of the bloodiest shootouts ever recorded.
A thank you is great but it may not be enough. That’s why you should watch all these incredible stories and then vote for your favourite Guardian at www.centrumguardians.com
