South African-born, Australian-raised singer-songwriter David Lazarus is bringing his music home with his latest single, “I Struck Gold With You.” “I grew up in Pretoria and spent the first ten years of my life there before moving to Australia,” David shares. “Those early years in SA shaped so much of who I am today.”
Blending elements of coastal folk and upbeat acoustic pop, “I Struck Gold With You” is a heartfelt reflection on the impact of a genuine connection.
“The absence of someone can make you realize the true impact they had,” says David Lazarus. “This song is a celebration of those rare connections that change us.”
Inspired by a profound encounter during his travels in South East Asia, the song captures the bittersweet realization of meeting someone who leaves a deep imprint on your life, only to part ways. Written as a letter, it expresses gratitude for those who shape us in unexpected ways.
The track came together quickly, with David Lazarus writing the lyrics in just 10 minutes and fine-tuning it while touring across the UK and Southeast Asia. Recorded in Australia, “I Struck Gold With You” was produced by Matt Bartlem (Matt Corby, Boo Seeka, Jarryd James, The Veronicas), marking their first collaboration.

“The blend of cultures, the memories of my upbringing, and the journey of adapting to a new country all play a role in my music,” he shares. “Some of my best memories are of road trips with my dad—driving through different parts of the country together. He’d always have music playing, introducing me to the artists he loved—Simon & Garfunkel, The Eagles, The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, The Police, Johnny Clegg, and so many more. Those songs became the soundtrack of my childhood.”
Having shared the stage with artists like Joshua Radin, Ingrid Michaelson, and Matthew Mole, Lazarus is now turning his attention to South Africa, reconnecting with his roots and audience.
With more music on the horizon, including an upcoming EP and plans to tour South Africa, David Lazarus is eager to continue sharing his journey. “I Struck Gold With You” is a fitting introduction to a new chapter—bringing his music full circle to where it all began.
