Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny: 13 Interesting Facts

The 2023 American action-adventure film titled Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is directed by James Mangold, who collaborated on the screenplay with Jez Butterworth, John-Henry Butterworth, and David Koepp. Serving as the sequel to Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008), this movie marks the fifth and concluding installment in the iconic Indiana Jones film series.

Harrison Ford, John Rhys-Davies, and Karen Allen reprise their roles as Indiana Jones, Sallah, and Marion Ravenwood, respectively, in addition to new cast members such as Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Antonio Banderas, Toby Jones, Boyd Holbrook, Ethann Isidore, and Mads Mikkelsen.

Taking place in 1969, the movie unfolds the story of Indy and his estranged goddaughter, Helena, as they endeavor to find a potent artifact ahead of Jürgen Voller. Once a Nazi, Voller has now become a NASA scientist with intentions to use the artifact to change the course of World War II.

There’s probably a lot that you don’t know about this film, but today my aim is to change that…

Here are 13 Interesting Facts You Might Not Know About Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

1. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is the sole film in the series not helmed by Steven Spielberg or conceived by George Lucas, both of whom assume executive producer roles instead.

Additionally, it marks the series’ inaugural departure from Paramount Pictures for distribution, attributed to the acquisition of Lucasfilm and sequel film rights by Walt Disney Studios. Paramount maintains distribution rights for the initial four films, along with a residual associate credit.

2. John Rhys-Davies had shown interest in returning to his role as Sallah from Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989). While he was offered a cameo in the wedding scene of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008), he declined, stating that he believed the character of Sallah held greater significance for the audience than a brief appearance.

3. During an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert (2015), Harrison Ford detailed the digital de-aging process employed for a flashback sequence in the film.

He explained, “They have this artificial intelligence program that can go through every foot of film that Lucasfilm owns. Because I did a bunch of movies for them, they have all this footage, including film that wasn’t printed. So they can mine it from where the light is coming from, from the expression. I don’t know how they do it. But that’s my actual face. Then I put little dots on my face and I say the words and they make [it]. It’s fantastic.”

Notably, at the age of 80, Harrison Ford holds the distinction of being the oldest actor to undergo de-aging in a film, surpassing Al Pacino, who was 79 when de-aged in The Irishman (2019).

4. Speculations surrounding Chris Pratt or Bradley Cooper taking on the iconic role of Indiana Jones were dispelled on October 27, 2015, when the studios officially confirmed that Harrison Ford would be returning to portray the titular character.

In 2019, Ford expressed his reluctance to have his character recast, declaring, “When I’m gone, he’s gone. It’s easy.” Subsequently, in 2022, Ford confirmed that the fifth film would mark his final portrayal of the character.

5. Harrison Ford was paid $20 million for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

6. In Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Harrison Ford is more than two decades older than Sir Sean Connery was when he portrayed Ford’s father in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989).

7. The street scenes set in New York were filmed in Glasgow (in Scotland) in late July 2021, featuring the astronauts’ parade on St Vincent Street.

8. At the time of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny‘s release, Harrison Ford was 80, just two weeks away from his 81st birthday, establishing him as the oldest individual to assume the lead role in a Disney film. The previous record was held by Richard Farnsworth, who was 79 when The Straight Story (1999) premiered.

9. Initial versions of the script contained a greater number of jokes about Indiana Jones’ age than what ultimately made it into the completed film. Harrison Ford objected to these jokes, feeling that they were diverting attention from the story for the audience. Consequently, the quantity of age-related humor was significantly scaled back.

10. The primary antagonist in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (portrayed by Mads Mikkelsen and named Voller) draws partial inspiration from the former Nazi scientist Wernher Von Braun. Thomas Kretschmann, who plays Colonel Weber, had previously depicted Von Braun in the History Channel’s TV series Project Blue Book.

11. Upon entering the cave of Dionysus alongside Indy, Helena (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) tests the echo within by singing the opening of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony (in C minor, Op. 67). Indy joins in, and together they sing a few bars of the first movement.

The selection of this particular piece is apt, as the 5th Symphony commences with the renowned four notes (dit-dit-dit-dum) known as the “Fate motif” or “fate.” These notes symbolize destiny, signifying the concept of destiny “knocking at the door.”

12. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny centers on the Antikythera Mechanism, an authentic ancient Greek artifact designed to monitor the cycles of the Sun, the Moon, and the planets in relation to the stars.

The discovery of the Antikythera mechanism, alongside its intricate bronze gearwheels, revolutionized the examination of ancient technology. Recovered from a shipwreck by sponge divers in 1901, this mechanism, among other antiquities, provided tangible evidence of a level of technological sophistication previously deemed implausible for the first century BCE.

13. Despite a production budget of $300 million and additional marketing expenses totaling $100 million, the movie’s box office earnings of $375 million are regarded as disappointingly low. As Harrison Ford’s final portrayal of the character, the film received mixed reviews from critics and lacked elements that resonated with younger audiences.
