In an unexpected festive-season release, Major Lazer marked the 10th anniversary of their global smash hit “Lean On” with the release of the Lean On EP (10th Anniversary).
The project commemorates a decade since the genre-defining collaboration with DJ Snake and MØ reshaped the global electronic music landscape.
Packed with fresh remixes, the EP honours the song’s enduring legacy as one of the most streamed tracks in history.
While retaining the original moombahton pulse that made “Lean On” iconic, the anniversary release reimagines the track through contemporary global sounds, introducing it to a new generation of listeners.
Amapiano spotlight for South Africa
For South African audiences, the standout contribution comes in the form of the UPZ & Fynite Amapiano Remix. Created by Cape Town-based producer UPZ, working under his Afrofusion and Amapiano-focused alias Fynite, the remix transforms “Lean On” into a vibrant, locally rooted reinterpretation.
Originally released in March 2015 as the lead single from Peace Is the Mission, “Lean On” went on to dominate charts in more than 20 countries, amass billions of streams, and set new benchmarks for global crossover success.
Its visually striking music video, filmed in India, further cemented its status as a cultural milestone. A decade later, the anniversary EP breathes new life into the anthem through a carefully curated selection of reworks.
UPZ & Fynite bring local energy to Major Lazer’s global classic
Alongside internationally recognised producers such as Robin Schulz and Illmind, the UPZ & Fynite remix sits at the heart of the release.
UPZ is a respected figure in South Africa’s house music scene, with releases on labels including Defected, Soul Candi and Strictly Rhythm. Under the Fynite moniker, his focus shifts toward afrobeats and Amapiano fusions.
The remix leans heavily into Amapiano’s signature log-drum rhythms, soulful piano lines and rolling bass, making it a natural fit for local dancefloors, playlists and festival stages. It not only honours the original track’s cross-cultural appeal, but also highlights South Africa’s Amapiano movement on an international platform.
“Working on ‘Lean On’ was an honour,” said Fynite. “I’ve loved the track since it was first released, and infusing it with Amapiano allowed us to bring a piece of South African culture into this timeless classic. I wanted to create something that connects with local fans while also introducing the genre to new listeners around the world.”
