Rising South African singer-songwriter Matthew Charles has unveiled his brand-new single, “The Deep End,” the latest addition to his growing catalogue. The track appears as the penultimate song on his upcoming debut EP, showcasing his talent for balancing emotional depth with an undeniably catchy sound.
“This song dives into the feeling of knowing you’re about to go through a hard time but trying to make the most of what you’ve got left,” Matthew Charles explains. “It was inspired by something very personal to me. A special person in my life was moving away, and we had limited time together – I wanted to capture that mix of sadness and joy.”

Co-written with producer Helena Bowie and co-produced by Matthew May, “The Deep End” began as a simple piano sketch before evolving into a full, impactful production. Reflecting its origins, Matthew has also released a stripped piano version: “It captures an extra layer of emotion and brings the song back to where it began. I’m super excited for people to hear both versions.”
Describing the single as an “upbeat-sad song,” Matthew Charles emphasizes the bittersweet contradiction at the heart of the track. “It’s almost the point of the song,” he says. “It’s about saying, ‘I know there’s a sad time coming, but let’s be as happy as we can for now.’ I really can’t wait to perform this one live.”
“The Deep End” follows previous releases, including “Te Amo,” “Disclaimers,” and “Home By Now,” which have helped Matthew build momentum as an independent artist and connect with fans through honesty, emotion, and a fresh take on pop. Each release brings him closer to his debut EP, which promises to showcase the full range of his artistry.
