On the 13th of December 2013 I watched Fokofpolisiekar at Arcade Empire. It was a jol of note. Two acts opened for them: Only Forever and Yoav.
We arrived at the venue around 9 PM and immediately made our way to one of the bars for some alcoholic refreshments. The venue filled up nicely and anticipation to see one of South Africa’s top rock acts grew as the evening progressed.
Opening act Only Forever got the party started and rocked out to the max. I have to admit that I’m not familiar with their music but their stage antics impressed me.
After them Yoav calmed things down a bit with songs like “Yellowbrite Smile”. “Karoake Superstar” and “Where is My Mind”. Being one of South Africa’s best musical exports, this barefoot guitar-playing loopmaster impressed the crowd with his musical skill and catchy vocals.
My review of Fokofpolisiekar at Arcade Empire
Fokofpolisiekar made their way onto the Arcade Empire stage around 11 PM, much to the delight of their fans. These Bellville boytjies tore the crowd a new one with many of their old songs and some of their newer songs. As usual I was completely blown away by their stage presence and live performance skills. You could definitely sense that these okes have been playing together for ten years – even if you aren’t a big fan of the band.
Francois Van Coke climbed onto almost anything he could find, Wynand Myburgh played the bass like his life depended on it, Jaco “Snake” Venter moered the drums harder than any onnie could bliksem a school laaitie in the 1980’s and Hunter Kennedy and Johnny De Ridder constantly reminded the crowd why they are one of the best guitar duos in the SA Music scene.
Fokofpolisiekar at Arcade Empire was one of the most intense and sweaty musical experiences of 2013 – just ask anyone who was there and they’ll agree with me.
Here are some photos that I took during the show, you can view more of them on the Henno Kruger Photography page on Facebook.
