Gerald Clark will be playing at Oppikoppi 2016 and I’m really looking forward to his set. He just has that ability to take the audience watching him live on a musical journey that contains some catchy lyrics and some really kief blues riffs.
I recently had a chat to him about Oppikoppi and a few other things. This is what he had to say:
When you think of Oppikoppi, what comes to mind and why?
I think of a planet far far away because this fest is surreal. The setting is epic and fill it up with 15,000 people, it becomes a place that where magic happens.
What is your favourite quote about the Blues?
“It in him and it gotta come out.. and it feels so good.” John lee Hooker.
I have to tell another favourite bluesman moment!!:)
I heard a song about a man that was on trial for murder and when the judge asked him whether he killed the man he answered “Yes sir Judge, I shot him, but him dying…that was between him and the Lord.” Classic.
What are you currently working on?
We’re launching a new music video soon. Very excited about it. I’m also busy working on new material, colabs for the scenic sessions and our tour trickling down the country in October when we come back from our Zambia / Zimbabwe tour. We’re also planning on going to the USA next year. I guess it’s a various projects at various stages of development kind of thing 😉
What are your thoughts about the current state of SA Music?
It’s always growing and I feel live music with real instruments speaks louder and louder to people coming to shows. I’m also really happy to see people like Gareth Wilson, Henk van der Schyf, Conrad Jamneck being in control of great festivals, venues and promoting good music. It’s growing.
What can audiences expect from your set at Oppikoppi this year?
I’m bringing the A-team with great guest artists! There will be 2 drummers on stage and I’m busy talking to Pitch Black Afro to come bust some rhymes on one of my tunes. My setlist is mostly Afroboer & The Goldengoose tunes with a few surprises. It’s going to be a killer show!
I’d like to thank Gerald Clark for this interview and I wish him all of the best with his set at Oppikoppi this year.
