His passion for creativity began at the age of three, nurtured by his family, and led to a career in the arts—a realization of his ‘childhood dream.’
Despite his busy professional life, Robin pursued part-time studies at the Academy of Sound Engineering, from which he is now a proud graduate. He believes in the importance of lifelong learning, noting that staying current is critical in the fast-paced entertainment industry.
Reflecting on his recent masterclass experience, he says, “It affirmed that I know a lot, but knowledge always needs revision, especially in an evolving creative and rights landscape. Every creative professional should take the Music Business Masterclass; it’s the best thing I’ve studied in years.”
Robin Kohl’s outstanding career has earned him 12 SAMA awards across seven categories, with the highlights being Album of the Year for Lira’s Soul in Mind and Best Engineer for AKA’s posthumous release, Mass Country — his second win in this category. He has been involved in over 100 SAMA-nominated projects, along with multiple SAFTAs and Loerie Awards.
Robin’s collaborative approach to projects has led to long-standing relationships with artists and clients. He doesn’t limit himself to just fulfilling the initial mandate; he often contributes creatively beyond expectations. His production portfolio includes five albums for Lira (along with all her concert films), four for AKA, five for Skwatta Kamp, three for Kwesta, three for HHP, and five for DJ Cleo.
In recent years, Robin Kohl has also completed around 2,000 Dolby Atmos mixes, humorously noting, “I stopped counting after 500 albums and a few thousand songs.”
Much of Robin’s success is rooted in his adaptability, innovation, and passion for collaborating with creative minds.
“Personal growth is my guiding star,” he shares. “I’ve outperformed veterans by building strong teams, planning meticulously, and trusting my intuition, even when it’s sometimes wrong.”
Looking ahead, Robin Kohl is enthusiastic about mentoring the next generation of talent, remaining committed to sharing his knowledge and collaborating with emerging artists. “My future depends on my appetite for risk,” he says.
His advice for newcomers to the industry? “Prepare for little sleep, constant adaptation, and the agility of an octopus. Creative energy can propel you, and success will follow, but it’s a long journey. Be ready to risk everything, especially your personal time.”
