At just two years old, Tristan Smit faced a reality no parent should ever have to confront. Diagnosed with a terminal brain stem tumour – his second cancer diagnosis at the time – Tristan’s parents, Helen and Pierre, were told their son had only six weeks to live. They were advised to focus on his comfort, manage his pain, and prepare to say goodbye.
Amid the despair, a glimmer of hope appeared: a specialised proton therapy treatment in Texas, USA. The treatment offered a chance to save Tristan’s life, but the cost was staggering – far beyond the reach of the Smit family.

Teachers Refuse to Give Up
In March 2010, Tristan Smit’s crèche teachers refused to accept that nothing more could be done. They reached out to Jacaranda FM’s Good Morning Angels for help.
What happened next would change Tristan’s life forever. Helen was surprised live on air with a large portion of the funds needed to travel to Texas, allowing Tristan access to the life-saving treatment he desperately needed. Against all odds, he not only survived but thrived.
Now 17, Tristan Smit recently celebrated a milestone birthday that once seemed impossible. His story is a powerful reminder of what can happen when compassion meets action.

Reflections on a Life Transformed
As Good Morning Angels marks its 20th anniversary, Helen and Pierre reflect on how the initiative changed their lives. “We had a lot of angels along our path that made this whole journey possible,” Helen shares. “I want to thank Jacaranda FM and Good Morning Angels for raising awareness about my son’s condition and giving him the treatment he needed.”
“Tristan’s story is one that stays with you,” adds Martin Bester, host of Jacaranda FM’s Breakfast With Martin Bester. “It reminds us that behind every Good Morning Angels moment is a real family, a real child, and a real future at stake. Twenty years later, the heart of Good Morning Angels remains the same – ordinary people coming together to give others hope when they need it most.”
