Cape Town rock outfit Southern Wild have officially marked their return with the release of “Bad Vibration King”, their first new single in five years. The track offers an early taste of an upcoming album that is currently in development and signals a fresh chapter for the band.

Since forming in 2015, Southern Wild have built a reputation for a genre-blurring sound that pulls from alternative rock, post-rock, neo-soul and folk.

Emerging from Cape Town’s fertile music scene, the band have graced the main stages of major South African festivals including Up The Creek, Rocking the Daisies, Smoking Dragon and Oppikoppi. They’ve also shared stages with international heavyweights Incubus and The Cure during their South African tours.

A Pause Forced by the Pandemic

Work on the band’s second album stalled midway through recording when the COVID-19 pandemic brought the industry to a standstill. During this period, frontman Dave spent four years living in Zambia, stepping back from the band due to personal and financial pressures. The pause proved challenging, but ultimately allowed space for reflection and reset.

A Reunited Band and a New Line-Up

Now reunited and creatively recharged, Southern Wild return as a four-piece with the addition of Conrad Birch on lead guitar. His arrival has played a key role in shaping the band’s current sound and direction, injecting renewed energy into both their writing and recording process.

The Meaning Behind “Bad Vibration King”

According to the band, “Bad Vibration King” explores the tension between emotional responsibility and the weight of reality.

“It’s about facing the harshness of reality while still trying to be something for someone who means everything to you. It’s about searching for reason and meaning in the midst of everything we’re all trying to overcome,” they explain.

A Song Years in the Making

The single has been evolving for several years, never quite feeling complete until the band’s line-up shift.

“We’d been working on this song for years, but it always felt like something was missing,” the band says. “When Conrad joined the band, the energy and inspiration he brought reignited our desire to finish it. This also marked the first lyrical collaboration between Dave and Conrad.”

Five Words That Sum It All Up

Asked to describe “Bad Vibration King” in just five words, Southern Wild keep it simple and optimistic:

“Where love exists, hope persists.”

What Comes Next for Southern Wild?

The release of “Bad Vibration King” signals the start of a new era for the band — one shaped by time apart, distance, and a renewed sense of creative connection. More music from the forthcoming album is expected later this year, as Southern Wild continue building on this long-awaited comeback.
