Of all the specifications listed in television marketing, “local dimming” is perhaps the most consequential and least understood.
It creates the biggest gap between a screen that performs the way Mini LED should and one that only looks good on paper. At its simplest, local dimming allows a television to adjust brightness independently across different regions of the screen. Done well, it provides deep, accurate contrast rather than a flat, washed-out image.

Hardware vs. Software Local Dimming
The critical distinction lies in how that dimming is achieved. Hardware local dimming physically controls clusters of LEDs behind the screen, zone by zone and in real time. Because the light source itself is switched off or dimmed at the point of origin, it produces high contrast: deep, accurate blacks sitting directly next to bright highlights with minimal light bleeding.
In contrast, software or “virtual” local dimming processes the image digitally without switching off individual physical LEDs. Under comparable conditions, this results in less precise control of dark areas and noticeable light leakage, leaving blacks reading closer to dark grey than true black.
The Marketing Gap and Asking the Right Question
Manufacturers rarely distinguish between the two approaches on store shelves, as the phrase “local dimming” sounds reassuring regardless of the underlying technology.
While brands like TCL disclose more than most by publishing dimming-zone counts across their Mini LED range, explicit confirmation of hardware-based control remains rare across the industry.
For consumers, relying on the spec sheet alone is not enough. The most effective step when shopping is to ask a salesperson a simple five-second question: “Is the local dimming hardware-controlled?” Asking this directly is one of the clearest indicators of how precisely a television can manage its backlight.
