The Narrow: An Interview With Hanu de Jong

Hanu De Jong & The Narrow will be playing at Park Acoustics for the first time on the 7th of October 2018. Hellcats, Fuzigish, Indian Mynah and Boo! are also on the line-up. This edition promises to be one of the best editions of Pretoria’s premier one-day music festival and if you enjoy live music, you should miss out on this.

I recently had a chat to Hanu (the lead vocalist of The Narrow) via e-mail about Park Acoustics and a few other things. This is what he had to say…

When you think of Park Acoustics, what comes to mind?

Sunshine and the smell of lager!

What has The Narrow been up to lately?

We’ve been promoting our 2017 release “Dream of Perelandra”. The album has loads of potential and because we don’t perform in South Africa that often we decided to take our time with the album.

What is the funniest thing that Hanu De Jong and The Narrow have ever experienced during a live set?

We played a festival in Pietermaritzburg and I decided not to play our hit song (at that time) last. So, after we finished playing “Lonely lonely” I said thanks to the crowd and started singing what would be the last song…. but the band had left the stage!

The band simply decided that was the show and walked off! Leaving me solo-rapping the intro to “Travellers” and ending with a “Yeah!” like it was planned.

Hanu De Jong - The Narrow

There are quite a few aspiring rock bands in South Africa. What advice can Hanu De Jong offer them?

If a project or band dynamic doesn’t work after a year of trying really hard… rethink and even break up if needed. Hard work is one thing, but if there’s no interest from the public or the band is always arguing… it’s not working guys.

People have probably asked you this a lot, but where exactly does the name “The Narrow” come from?

Every last one of us are narrow minded. Our memories define us so how can you not be narrow minded if your world and thoughts are limited by a short human existence worth of experiences. If my words and our music can add just a little more color or even perspective to people who hear it…. job done.

What would be Hanu De Jong’s idea of the ultimate Celebrity Death Match?

Pickle Rick vs Donald Trump (Hanu, that would be epic and Pickel Rick will definitely win)

What can music fans expect from Hanu De Jong and The Narrow at Park Acoustics on the 7th of October?

Good power-songs you know – and we are also working on a few surprises…

I would like to thank Hanu De Jong and The Narrow for this interview and I wish them all of the best with their upcoming tour and their set at Park Acoustics. You can also catch him live at this year’s edition of Blood Brothers (which 2nd leg is taking place at Platteland in Centurion)..

If you don’t have tickets for Park Acoustics yet, enter our competition… We are giving away a double ticket.
