    1. The Bikeriders – Available to stream Showmax already

    After a chance encounter, headstrong Kathy is drawn to Benny, a member of the Midwestern motorcycle club, the Vandals. As the club transforms into a dangerous underworld of violence, Benny must choose between Kathy and his loyalty to what has become a gang.

    Oscar nominees Austin Butler and Tom Hardy star as Benny and Johnny, with Emmy winner Jodie Comer (Killing Eve) as Kathy. The cast also includes Oscar nominee Michael Shannon (Nocturnal Animals, Take Shelter), BAFTA nominees Mike Faist (Challengers, West Side Story), and Norman Reedus (The Walking Dead).

    Inspired by Danny Lyon’s 1967 photo book, The Bikeriders is a passion project by Cannes winner Jeff Nichols (Take Shelter), who wrote and directed. The crime drama holds an 80% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, ranking #2 on Indiewire’s Critics’ Poll of the Best Films Opening in 2024.

    2. Gladiator II – Available to stream Showmax already

    Years after witnessing the death of hero Maximus, Lucius is forced into the Colosseum when his home is conquered by tyrannical emperors ruling Rome. With rage and the Empire’s future at stake, Lucius looks to his past for strength to restore Rome’s glory.

    The #12 box office hit of 2024, Gladiator II sees Ridley Scott continue his epic saga. Nominated at the Oscars, BAFTAs, Golden Globes, and Critics Choice Awards, it stars Paul Mescal (Normal People) as Lucius, nominated for Best Lead Actor at the Irish Film and Television Awards, and Oscar winner Denzel Washington as Macrinus.     3. Never Let Go – Available to stream on Showmax already

    Oscar winner Halle Berry stars in the psychological thriller Never Let Go, directed by Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes, Crawl).

    As evil overtakes the world, a mother and her twin sons rely on their house and family bond for protection, staying tethered by ropes. When one son questions the evil’s reality, their ties unravel, sparking a terrifying fight for survival.

    Child actors Anthony B Jenkins and Percy Daggs IV (Paradise) co-star, with Daggs IV nominated for a 2025 Image Award for Outstanding Youth Performance. Bloody Disgusting calls it “a vicious little bedtime story with sharp teeth,” while Variety praises its “harrowing, claustrophobic” themes of grief and redemption.

    4. A Quiet Place: Day One – Watch on MM2 (Channel 106 on DStv) at 20:00, Wednesday, 7 May or Stream it on Showmax

    Rotten Tomatoes’ second best-reviewed horror movie of 2025, A Quiet Place: Day One stars Lupita Nyong’o (Us, Black Panther) as Sam, a terminally ill cancer patient trapped in New York City during an alien invasion by creatures with ultra-sensitive hearing.

    The prequel, the third in the A Quiet Place series, earned a Best Horror Film nomination at the 2025 Saturn Awards, with Nyong’o up for Best Actress.

    With an 86% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, The Guardian’s 4/5-star review calls it “bleak, bruising but curiously life-affirming.” Co-stars include Joseph Quinn (Stranger Things), Alex Wolff (Hereditary), Djimon Hounsou, Takunda Khumalo, and Eliane Umuhire.

    5. Widow Clicquot – Available to stream on Showmax

    Widow Clicquot tells the true story of Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin (1777–1866), the “Grande Dame of Champagne.” Haley Bennett stars as Madame Clicquot, joined by Tom Sturridge (The Sandman), Sam Riley (Control), and Natasha O’Keeffe (Peaky Blinders).

    Based on Tilar J Mazzeo’s book, the biopic premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, earning an 80% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Deadline calls it “fast-paced and sexy.”

    6. Longlegs – Watch on M-Net (Channel 101 on DStv) at 21:00, Friday, 9 May

    Longlegs follows FBI agent Lee Harker, whose pursuit of a serial killer uncovers occult clues to stop his terrifying spree. Maika Monroe (It Follows) stars as Lee, with Oscar winner Nicolas Cage as the villain.

    The highest-grossing independent movie of 2024, Longlegs has an 86% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, ranking #5 Best Horror Movie of 2024. At the 2025 Saturn Awards, writer-director Osgood Perkins won Best Screenwriting. AV Club calls it “a triumph of tension and pure nightmare fuel.”

    7. Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy – Watch on M-Net (Channel 101 on DStv) at 20:05, Sunday, 11 May or Stream on Showmax from Monday, 12 May 2025

    Renée Zellweger returns in the fourth Bridget Jones film, based on Helen Fielding’s books. Now in her 50s, single after her husband’s death, Bridget navigates parenting and dating. Hugh Grant reprises Daniel Cleaver, joined by Leo Woodall (The White Lotus) and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

    With the best UK/Ireland romcom box office opening ever, it’s the eighth biggest hit of 2025 globally, holding an 86% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Independent (UK) calls it “vulnerable, honest and very funny” in a four-star review.

    8. Die Tragiese Saak van Pamina Vermaak – Stream on Showmax from Sunday, 11 May 2025

    Based on Annie Klopper’s novel, Die Tragiese Saak van Pamina Vermaak follows a jobless journalist, Pamina, who returns to her West Coast hometown and meets rocker Wolf de Jager (Christiaan Schoombie). Directed by Kabous Meiring, it won Best Actress (Carla Smith), Best Script, Best Cinematography, and Best Editing at Silwerskerm 2023.

    Klyntji calls it a “romcom with a leather jacket,” praising Carla Smith’s “convincing, scatterbrained” Pamina.

    9. Apartment 7A – Stream on Showmax from Thursday, 15 May 2025

    A prequel to 1968’s Rosemary’s Baby, Apartment 7A stars Julia Garner (Ozark) as a dancer whose dreams are shattered by injury. A wealthy couple welcomes her into their Bramford apartment, where evil lurks. Dianne Wiest (Bullets Over Broadway) and Kevin McNally (Pirates of the Caribbean) co-star.

    Nominated for a 2025 Saturn Award for Best TV Presentation, it’s from the producers of A Quiet Place.

    10. Wicked Little Letters – Stream on Showmax from Thursday, 15 May

    Based on a true 1920s story, Wicked Little Letters stars Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley as neighbors Edith and Rose. When residents receive profane letters, Rose is blamed amid a national uproar. The cast includes Timothy Spall, Anjana Vasan, and Alisha Weir.

    With an 80% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Deadline hails it as “the British comedy of the year.”

    Liam Hemsworth (Westworld) stars as war veteran Lee Gunner, whose camping trip with his sons turns deadly after encountering a biker gang in a drug operation. Morgan Freeman plays kingpin Kendric Ryker, with Joseph Baena as Deputy Wally Harper.

    Based on John Green’s novel, Turtles All theicazione Way Down stars Isabela Merced (The Last of Us S2) as Aza Holmes, a teenager navigating emotions and reconnecting with her crush (Felix Mallard). Co-stars include J Smith-Cameron (Succession) and Judy Reyes (Scrubs).

    With an 86% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Roger Ebert calls it a “charming, delightful YA romance.”

    Stream on Showmax from Monday, 26 May 2025

    A current-day sequel to 1996’s Twister, Twisters stars Daisy Edgar-Jones (Normal People) and Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick) as rivals uniting to predict and tame tornadoes. Directed by Lee Isaac Chung (Minari), it’s the 19th biggest box office hit of 2024.

    Nominated for a Golden Globe and Grammy, it ranks fifth among 2024’s Action & Adventure films on Rotten Tomatoes, praised for “spectacle” and Powell’s “gale force charisma.”

    15. The American Society of Magical Negroes – Stream on Showmax from Thursday, 29 May 2025

    The American Society of Magical Negroes follows Aren, recruited into a secret society of magical Black people easing white people’s lives. Justice Smith stars with David Alan Grier, Drew Tarver, Nicole Byer, Rupert Friend, and Nozipho Mclean.

    Premiering at Sundance, it won the 2024 Directors to Watch award for writer-director Kobi Libii.

    16. Wild Wild Space – Stream on Showmax from Wednesday, 28 May 2025

    Wild Wild Space follows Astra Space, Planet Labs, and Rocket Lab competing to launch satellite-carrying rockets. Inspired by Ashlee Vance’s book, directed by Ross Kaufmann (Born into Brothels), it explores capitalism’s dark side in the space race.

    The HBO documentary holds an 88% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with the Wall Street Journal praising its “right stuff” and questions.
