In case you did not know, The Deathrettes hail from Cape Town, South Africa and was formed early 2015. They’re pulling together a dynamic line up of Dylan Rooibokkie (Black Lung) on lead vocals and guitar, Warren Fisher (The Future Primitives, The Dyna Jets, Black Lung) on rhythm guitar, Michael Clarke on bass and Charl Stemmet on drums. Their sound can best be described as Garage Groove, drawing influence from early 60’s psych and modern garage music.
The Deathrettes will be playing at Mieliepop 2017 in March and I’m looking forward to seeing them for the first time since they don’t play that many shows in Gauteng.
I recently had a chat to the band, this is what they had to say:
Where does the name “The Deathrettes” come from?
We were stuck for a name for a while in the beginning of the band (Trying to get the four of us to decide on anything is a bit tricky).
Charlie brought these black smokes to a rehearsal once, and kinda just kidding around about these death cigarettes, one thing lead to another and we ended up with The Deathrettes.
What have you been up to lately?
We wrote a few new tracks towards the end of last year and took off some time recently to give ourselves a break after a busy year of shows and recording. We’re looking forward to the coming year and have some fun things in store!
What is the funniest thing you’ve experienced during a live set?
That’s gotta be when Desmond from Runaway Nuns took our stage props for our EP launch and chucked them over his head! We made a shift castle out of boxes that ended up getting destroyed and went flying through the air during the last few songs of our set.
If you could describe your music to someone who hasn’t heard it before, what would you say?
Two slices of 60’s Revival, melted Garage and a sprinkle of Psych on some whole-wheat, seeded, Groove.
What can music fans expect from your set at Mieliepop 2017?
Good music, good looks and a good time.
