Weston and Engine: A Quick Pre Mieliepop Festival Chat

In case you did not know, Weston and Engine are an electronic music duo from Johannesburg, South Africa. A diverse combination of talent, skill and hard work has brought these two inspired musicians together.

Formulated at Organic Audio Johannesburg, the duo have found new life and respect in each other with their respective influences and tastes in sound. The sound can be described as Deep Progressive Techno blended with a combination of rolling deep grooves, melodies and powerful basslines.

Their inspiration comes from a broad base of genres – Jazz, Reggae, The Blues, Classical, Trip Hop, Hip Hop, Garage, House Music, Techno, Minimal and Progressive House. Weston and Engine are one of the acts that will be performing at Mieliepop 2017.

I recently had a chat to the duo about this and a few other things. This is what they had to say:

Where does the name “Weston and Engine” come from?

The Weston and Engine name originally started as a trio comprised of formerly known duo Earth Engine (Pablo Lundall / Sean Phillips) and Carl Weston. We decided to drop the Earth and fuse the two names, thus Weston and Engine was born. Weston and Engine is now a duo comprised by Pablo Lundall and Sean Phillips.

How would you describe your brand of electronic music to someone who has not heard it before?

Our music can be described as a powerful, educated and underground sound with rich emotive touches that evoke a journey type of feeling throughout the sets we play.. Taking inspirations from Electronica, Deep House, Techno/Minimal and Progressive House. WE try to be as diverse as possible in our sets to refrain from stagnancy in any way. Its all about the journey and flow

What have you been up to lately?

WE spend most days locked away in studio lately writing our own brand of music and also searching for other great music. Amonst this, Pablo is running a really awesome initiative called EEL “Educate, Empower, Learn” which facilitates growth in the media arts sector for under priviledged children who wouldn’t be able to afford the high costs of studying by bringing in the best professional people in each respective field to teach. Sean is busy with the groundwork for a new record label that will be owned by Weston and Engine exclusively.

Weston and Engine

What is the funniest thing you’ve experienced during one of your sets?

It must be women flashing their goodies at us! Haha, doesn’t happen often but it sometimes does.

What can electro fans expect from your set at Mieliepop 2017?

Expect a mature, forward thinking, emotive, powerful and groovy set comprised of a mixed variety of eclectic dance music that soothes the senses and awakens the soul. We will also be bringing out some old school all time classics.

I’d like to thank Weston and Engine for this interview and I wish them all of the best with their set at Mieliepop this year. If you don’t have your ticket for Mieliepop Festival yet, get yours here.
