South African singer-songwriter Basson Laas returns with his inspiring new single, “Every River”, a heartfelt reflection on perseverance, hope and finding purpose along life’s winding path. Released ahead of his forthcoming EP, Man the Fields, the song marks another important milestone for the rising independent artist.
Rooted in folk, pop and alternative influences, “Every River” transforms the uncertainty of life’s journey into a powerful river metaphor.

The song explores the idea that personal growth and success rarely follow a straight line, instead requiring patience, resilience and the courage to keep moving forward.
Basson Laas explains that the song was inspired by the realisation that achievement, whatever form it takes, often comes after years of personal growth and patience.
Like a river that begins as a small stream before navigating obstacles and gradually becoming stronger, the song reflects the twists, challenges and progress that shape our own journeys.
How “Every River” Came Together
The new single was recorded after Basson Laas and his band won ConXion Studios’ Battle of the Bands in Pretoria in October 2025. As part of their prize, the group earned valuable studio time, giving them the opportunity to bring “Every River” to life in the recording studio.
Produced by Ruan Graaff, the recording deliberately maintains the organic chemistry that Basson Laas and his band developed while performing the song live. Rather than chasing technical perfection, the musicians wanted the finished recording to retain the emotion and authenticity of their live performances.
That approach gives “Every River” a natural, honest quality that complements its message of perseverance and personal growth.
Basson Laas Draws Inspiration From His South African Roots
Growing up on a South African farm, Basson Laas developed a deep appreciation for storytelling and the quieter moments of everyday life. He taught himself to play guitar at the age of 14, eventually turning songwriting into a creative outlet that would lead him towards a professional music career in 2022.
Since releasing his debut EP, Good Morning Dreamer, in 2023, Basson Laas has steadily developed a catalogue of deeply personal music characterised by honesty, warmth and emotional storytelling.
Basson Laas Continues to Connect With Audiences
Live, Basson Laas performs alongside drummer Jan-Hendrik Labuschagne and bassist and keyboardist Callie van der Merwe. Together, the trio has developed a live sound that focuses on sincerity and heartfelt performances.
Basson Laas’ cinematic approach to music videos has also helped expand the stories behind his music, with previous songs including “Guardian Angel”, “Tightly Bound”, “Worth Loving” and “Smile” receiving visual treatments that complement their respective themes.
