2. The country has a rich and fascinating history, and was home to the indigenous Taíno people before being colonized by the Spanish in the 16th century.

4. Fidel Castro was a Cuban communist revolutionary and politician who served as Prime Minister of the country from 1959 to 1976 and President of the Council of State and Council of Ministers from 1976 to 2008. He was a controversial and polarizing figure, both admired and vilified for his leadership of Cuba and his role in the Cold War.

Fidel Castro - Cuba

In 1952, Castro led an unsuccessful attack on the Moncada Barracks, a military facility in Santiago de Cuba, as part of a plan to overthrow the government of Cuban President Fulgencio Batista. He was captured and sentenced to 15 years in prison, but was released after two years as part of a general amnesty.

After his release from prison, Castro fled to Mexico and formed a revolutionary group called the 26th of July Movement. In 1959, he and his followers returned to Cuba and led a successful revolution that toppled the Batista government.

Castro became Prime Minister of Cuba and implemented a series of sweeping reforms, including land redistribution, nationalization of foreign-owned businesses, and the establishment of a socialist government.
