James Deacon Releases New Single: “Same Road”

SAMA-nominated artist James Deacon returns with a brand-new single titled “Same Old”, a track that once again highlights his genre-bending approach to music and songwriting. Known for constantly exploring different sounds and styles, James describes this latest release as one of the most personal pieces he has created so far.

The single was written during a single session with his longtime collaborator, Paul Gala. Reflecting on the experience, James calls it “the best thing I’ve ever made”, adding that the track finally feels like an authentic representation of who he is as an artist.

James Deacon

Throughout his career, James has never been afraid to experiment. His catalogue moves between genres and influences, often surprising listeners with unexpected sonic directions.

For him, that creative freedom is essential. Over the past few years he has deliberately pushed himself to explore different musical territories in order to grow as a songwriter and artist.

He admits that this process has sometimes made it difficult to feel like he has a single, consistent identity as an artist.

Rather than forcing himself into one lane, James prefers to follow inspiration wherever it leads.

The Story Behind “Same Old”

Lyrically, “Same Old” reflects on the cyclical nature of life. According to James, life often feels like a repeating pattern of highs and lows, meaningful moments and difficult challenges.

At its core, the song explores the push and pull that exists within relationships, particularly when conflict arises between people who care deeply about each other.

For James, those moments can mirror the larger cycles of life itself.

Arguments, reconciliations and emotional tension often follow familiar patterns, eventually returning to the same outcome again and again. The song captures that emotional rhythm and turns it into something both reflective and relatable.

A Return to Musical Roots

Compared to some of his earlier releases, “Same Old” is deeply influenced by the music that first inspired James to become an artist.

He explains that the song carries a strong emotional connection, which is why he spent more time than usual shaping the lyrics and arrangement.

One of the most personal elements of the track is the violin, an instrument James played himself on the recording.

The violin holds special significance for him, as it was the instrument that first sparked his love for music when he was just four years old. Including it on the track felt like a full-circle moment in his musical journey.

James Deacon Refusing to Be Boxed In

James Deacon has often been told that his willingness to move between genres could hold him back in the industry. But for him, that creative openness is exactly what makes making music exciting.

He believes that the freedom to create whatever feels right in the moment is the reason he continues to love what he does.

That same mindset applies to what comes next in his career. While he has several new tracks currently in development, he prefers not to plan too far ahead.

Some of these songs may eventually form part of a larger EP, but for now James is taking things one track at a time.

Hidden Talents and Surprising Achievements

Although fans know James Deacon primarily for his contemporary music, there are several aspects of his background that might surprise listeners.

As a child he was deeply involved in classical music, winning multiple eisteddfod competitions before the age of ten. He was also invited to attend a violin conference for gifted children in Turin, Italy.

In addition to that, James holds multiple qualifications in classical opera, further highlighting the depth of his musical training.

Outside of music, he also has a passion for stand-up comedy and improvisational comedy. While it remains a dream for now, he hopes that one day he will have the courage to try performing comedy on stage as well.

A New Chapter in Cape Town

James Deacon has recently relocated to Cape Town, a move that marks an exciting new chapter in his career.

The change of scenery will allow him to focus more on live performances in the city while continuing to expand his creative projects. Together with his best friend and collaborator Luke McPhail, he also runs a small music and entertainment business.

In addition, James has begun stepping into the world of artist management, broadening his role within the music industry.

Despite these new ventures, music remains at the centre of everything he does. With “Same Old” leading the way, fans can expect plenty more releases from James Deacon in the near future.
