The beloved South African house anthem “Pure Surprise” (feat. DKP) by UPZ, originally released in 2007 on soWHAT Records and later licensed by Soul Candi in 2009, receives a fresh Amapiano reinterpretation.
A Timeless Club Anthem Reimagined
A chart-topping hit that became a singalong staple in Mzansi’s clubs, groove hangouts, and radio stations, “Pure Surprise” has remained a timeless favorite at house-themed events.
Over the years, the track has inspired numerous covers, live renditions, and sampling, cementing its cultural significance.
The Amapiano Inspiration
When asked why an Amapiano version, UPZ explained that in 2021, Khanyisa and MFR Souls released two Amapiano tracks, “Bheka Mina Ngedwa” and “Sthandwa Sami”, both interpolating the “Pure Surprise” chorus melody as their main hook. Khanyisa’s track, in particular, exploded, launching her music career.
This sparked the idea that an official Amapiano version of “Pure Surprise”, if done right, could introduce the song to a new generation of listeners.
A Soulful Rework by Fynite
For this rework, UPZ, under his Afrofusion alias Fynite, opted for a private school Amapiano sound—preserving the soulful core of the original while incorporating Amapiano drum arrangements and subtle log drums for a modern sonic backdrop.
He noted that he’s a huge fan of the private school Amapiano vibe, like Kelvin Momo’s work. Initially, he hoped to collaborate with Kelvin Momo on this remake, but when their schedules didn’t align, he decided to take it on himself as Fynite, focusing on keeping the essence of the original intact.
Jazz Fusion Meets House Classic
The original rap verse is replaced by a tasteful jazz fusion-inspired guitar solo from Durban-based guitarist and producer Kenton Lee, a collaborator of Morda.
Reflecting on his connection to the track, Lee recalled how he first encountered “Pure Surprise” during his time as part of the test crew for Big Brother House in 2011/12. He said it instantly became a favorite and that contributing to the 2025 remake was an honour.
