Today sees the release of a brand new single from Zebraman, entitled “Sunlight”. “Sunlight” comes after the release of their previous single, “Radio Romeo” which reached #1 on the JacarandaFM SA Top 20, and which is currently climbing the chart at #12 on the OFM Top 30.

The song’s lyrics were conceptualised by member Jan-Meyer Verhoef in November 2020. During that month, frontman Johan Viljoen brought a chorus idea to him and they both realised it worked with some of the lyrics that Jan-Meyer had already written. The band worked on other songs for a few months, and then, from March 2021, the song developed considerably and continuously took on new shapes and forms.
“Sunlight” is an eclectic offering which drew inspiration from three ephemeral life moments: Firstly, a fun moment with a loved one in the kitchen – twirling the other around early in the morning – before they slip away for the day. Secondly, the experience of falling in love while you’re on holiday on an island.
You see this elusive person during your stay, become infatuated and end up having to leave again for home, leaving them behind on this distant isolated piece of land. Thirdly, the song drew inspiration from the powerful, final moment in The Breakfast Club.
With signature Zebraman elements such as hard hitting drums, an evocative synth bassline and a mixture of exotic and retro sounding keyboards that accompany Johan’s voice in a tropical retro sounding song, the single explores sounds further than anything fans have heard before.
